It's about a small town in Quebec, Sainte-Marie-la-Mauderne, a fishing village with 125 inhabitants. Since there is no more fishing, the townspeople want a factory to open so there will be jobs, but to get the factory, they need a doctor. So they manage to get a sophisticated doctor from Montreal to come to town, and then try to persuade him to stay by making it the perfect place for him. Just their luck, they found the one man in Canada who loves cricket. So they make a cricket team for him, and bug his phone, and create a spiral of deception guaranteed to captivate him and keep him in town. What can go wrong?
And there is one person in town who won't lie to him....
Funniest scenes:
- trying to convince a bureaucrat that the town of 125 actually has a population of 225
- taking the doctor fishing in such a way that the large fish he catches is already frozen
- a cricket match in which the only person who knows how to play the game is he only spectator - and they have to convince him they've been playing for years
It's a wonderful, charming, funny movie. The scenery is lovely, too - it was filmed in Harrington Harbour, on the St. Laurence coast.
I wonder what it would be like in English.
