At work today I went to a presentation on Nepal. Nepal has always fascinated me; but most of my research into it was years ago.
The presenter was a Canadian who had used the network of cooperatives and credit unions already in place in Nepal to set up a program for Nepalese women to educate themselves about the political situation - to understand what democracy is, and what the constitutional issues are that they are facing with the Constitutional Assembly. The program was extremely successful, but apparently CIDA is no longer funding programs of governance - they're funding economic programs. Seems to me education is crucially important right now: a third of the country is illiterate.
Such is the way of the world. I worry about Nepal, a country with so much issues (like poverty and geography) and I do want them to fare well, and not to erupt into war. There's enough war in the Himalayas and nearby these days.
