[livejournal.com profile] halloftwotruths has been exploring her personality via the Myers-Briggs personality classification lately and finding it rewarding. I was trying to remember what I was; for some reason the designation never sticks in my head. So I did the tests again and got this result:

You're an INFP

Yeah, okay, that sounds familiar. I'm not sure about the 'finding perfection' part but the part that seems particularly to describe me is:
Inner harmony is the most important thing to you. You're sensitive and loyal. You have a strong sense of honor concerning your personal values. You'd rather communicate your feelings in writing...

Way too true. So is the line: You do best in a flexible situation where the teacher/colleegue takes a personal interest in you...

I'd quibble about the writing style of the comments, but that'd be too much like looking for perfection, wouldn't it?

The site I got this at (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] halloftwotruths) is here. Here's what it has to say about my type:

You focus deeply on your values and devote your life to chasing ideals... you often draw people together around a common purpose and work to find a place for each person within the group. You're creative and seek new ideas and possibilities. You quietly push for what's important to you, and rarely give up. You might be somewhat gentle or have a good sense of humor, you could be hard to get to know and overlooked by others...you like to make the world more in line with your vision of perfection.

If you're a teenager, you probably have a bit of a rebellious streak. You might argue with others who hold different values than yourself..you probably have a small close-knit group of friends...you can relax around these pals and be pretty entertaining, since you see the world in a different and special way... that's why your posts on the Storm Palace are so great!

Inner harmony is the most important thing to you. You're sensitive and loyal. You have a strong sense of honor concerning your personal values. You'd rather communicate your feelings in writing...

You do best in a flexible situation where the teacher/colleegue takes a personal interest in you...you like to interact with your peers, but not TOO much ...you have both creativity and flexibility, and you like that about yourself....you don't get bogged down by details...your job must be fun and it must be meaningful to you....you don't wanna feel conspicuous so you'll sell yourself short just to avoid the spotlight...

You can be a gentle and subtle leader...being indirect and inclusive of others...you don't confront people head-on, but rather work with 'em to get the job done....you lead with your values in mind and let these guide you...you don't like conflict, so you don't confront situations directly.. you'd rather wait for a situation to work itself out....

Leisure and kickin' back is really important to you. sometimes it is hard to separate work from play, huh? when you find a new recreational pursuit, you do a lot of reading up on it...most of your leisure things are done alone, like reading, listening to music, and even BBSing....when you want to be sociable, you can be very charming and outgoing..

Love is a very deep commitment to you...it's not easily attained...you probably pick out flaws or are disappointed when he or she doesn't match up to your ideal as to what love should be like...first dates are very well set up to make sure everything is taken care of so it can be "just right." you might have a hard time sharing feelings about others...you tell so many feelings inside that you forget to tell your partner that you love 'em or whatever....

If the relationship goes bad, you take it to heart, but probably don't tell many others about it....you have a tendency to overreact, huh? Other things to watch for...don't get so caught up in your dreams that you don't consider others' points-of-view...you might not adjust your vision to the facts of a situation...you may need a "reality check" once in a while... also, don't try to please everyone and be so hesitant to criticize... don't delay projects 'cause you're holding out for perfection...it's not gonna come...don't get overly critical because no one matches your perfect ideals... you could lash out and it could get ugly.

INFP: "I Never Find Perfection"

www.humanmetrics.com (the other link in LJ) has a 50 question test that's more like the typical Myers-Briggs. I ended up taking three tests to feel confident that I was an INFJ by the questions alone. Once I started doing a lot of reading about the types, I've become sure that I'm an INFJ rather than an INFP. Some of the books that you can get from the library, like "Please Understand Me II" by David Keirsey, have tests in them. The Lenore Thomson book does too. Each book and each description kind of adds to your understanding of your type. Google INFJ and you'll find at least half a dozen sites with descriptions of types. I've printed mine out.

Yeah, I plan to do some more research on the subject, like getting the books out of the library again. Where did you get the statistics on the percentage of people in the categories?

I just did the full Meyers-Briggs test as part of a class. I'm an INTP. The book we're using in class to work with our results is called "Breakthrough Creativity" by Lynne C. Levesque. She divides the MBTI scores into 8 creative 'types' and then talks about the strengths and weaknesses of each.

I'm sorry to see my public library doesn't have that book. I'll have to look for it! So are you and I the same 'type'?

Each book you read on the subject, and each web site you visit to read up on the types, will have a *slightly* different percentage for the types (varying a percentage point or so), because they each use their own data, and some of the statistics-gathering is newer than others. Original studies in the 1980s and 90s said INFJs were 3% of the population, and it's been revised steadily downward ever since. I can't name the particular site or book I used without going back through all the sites I checked out (and there were lots) but it was one which was pretty current, date-wise. If I run across the statistic again, I'll post where I found it.

I'd be interested - I find the whole subject interesting. I hadn't realized until you mentioned it that the personality types weren't evenly distributed through the population. No reason they should be, of course.

I'm going to look for some of the books tomorrow, if I get a chance.

I can see that statistic in my mind's eye, I just don't know where. I've been doing a *lot* of reading, both in books and online and also in bookstores, since I got into this. Keirsey's site says it's 2.6%, but Keirsey is slightly different than MTBI. It's probably in one of the books I have, and I just haven't found it because I'm looking for it!

70% of the population are Extraverts of one sort or another, so any introverts are swimming uphill... ;-)

I never realized introverts were so outnumbered! That explains a lot.
