What did the title mean? I know, Smallville titles are often obscure or random anyway - has anyone figured out why "Hug" was called "Hug"? My friends were remarking how "Extinction" is an unusually long title, when the show usually goes for titles of one or two syllables. I think of a three syllable word as the sign of a good episode, like "Insurgence".

Aside from the remarkable Clark/Lex embrace in "Phoenix", I think this is the Clexiest episode since "Redux". Lex confides his thoughts to Clark. They spend time together - actually interacting. Clark saves Lex's life. Things are as they should be.

And of course, Lionel.... in fine form. Beautiful! Blackmailing Chloe - and using Gabe to do it! - but how can he believe anything she will tell him under coercion?
And to see Chloe and Clark as friends again - that's worth a lot.

Pete: at least he isn't around too much any more. I would have found his "Lemon Pledge" line funny if it hadn't been metatextual and therefore intrusive. We all burst out laughing when the Lemon Pledge ad came on next.

Martha: At her best. Dare I hope she will go to work for Lionel again?

Jonathan: Yeah, right, Einstein, take a kryptonite bullet out of your son's shoulder and then sit contemplating it while holding it inches from his pain-racked body. Still, I liked Jonathan in that one, particularly in the scene where the Sheriff comes along and everyone is trying to act so innocent - practically whistling.

Lex: Could he be more perfect? Well, he could have more screen time, but I'm not complaining. What we have is cherce. I'm not sure he ever looked so good. All his chemistry is back.

I imagine the meaning of 'Extinction' is that whatsisname (Ven? Ben? Van? the bad guy, at any rate) is trying to make meteor mutants extinct...

Oh and another thing I loved about the episode is Martha calling Clark 'baby' - such a mothery thing to say. sigh.

I'm going to have to watch that again to wrap my head around the Lex plot.

I think the bad guy was Van.

trying to make meteor mutants extinct...

That must be it! Which shows confused thinking, since none of the freaks inherited their condition, but Van wasn't too smart anyway. It seems such an X-Men-like plot. (This is a good thing, of course.)

I liked Martha calling Clark "baby" too. It was sweet. (Just as I am noticing and enjoying, as I reread The Return of the King, the times Sam calls Frodo "my dear". Aww.)
