Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 1...
Dec. 29th, 2009 07:06 pmI was puzzling over events in Doctor Who "The End of Time, Part 1" that I didn't understand, and thought I might make a list. For one thing, others who read this might have understood more (or better than I did) and be able to explain what I didn't catch on to. After all, I don't have the background in Classic Doctor Who to help me. For another, it will be fun to look back after I've seen Part 2, and see what's been explained, and what's been left to our imaginations.
So: My List:
- As I understand, there were a group of (scary women) who were acolytes or cult followers of Harold Saxon, and they plotted to bring him back from the dead, which they could do because they had his ring with some of his life essence in it. (I am trying carefully here not to use the word "horcrux".) What I don't understand is: How did they find and get the ring in the first place? I can imagine that they knew he was going to store his life essence in the thing, and that he taught them what to do with it, but how would he know where the Doctor would burn his body? Tracking device in the ring?
- How much of this did the Master anticipate and set up in advance?
- Why did they need Lucy Saxon?
- What did Lucy Saxon do, or try to do, with her magic ampule, besides blow up the prison? What effect did it have on the Master? Did she do what she intended to do? I thought the "together forever" angle implied some sort of mind meld, but I don't see any vestige of her there.
- How did he become able to shoot power-beams and fly?
- Does he hate the Doctor, or love him, or see him as an obstacle, or a pawn?
- Why does the Master hate humans?
- Who is the Woman in White? Why should the Doctor not know about her, or what she told Wilf?
- What is the rhythm in the Master's head?
- Is the occasional visibility of the Master's skull as sign of the excess of body energy he
is using? like the hunger? - Where are the Time Lords we saw? How many were there, how and why are they coming back, and why do they seem to want the end of time to happen?
- Is "the end of time" the same thing as "the end of the universe"?
- If time ends, what happens to the parallel worlds, like Rose's? Nothing, I would assume. But...?
- Why was there a link between Wilf, Joshua Naismith, and the Master? I know why Donna picked up on Naismith - because the Ood saw him in a vision, and she still shares part of that mind-link with the Ood - but I don't see where Wilf and the Master fit into that.
- How old is Naismith's daughter Abigail supposed to be? She looks 25, acts 15.
- Should Bad Wolf not have a role here? Being, as it were, above and beyond time?
Counting days till part 2...
