fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Ten)

Fannish perplexity. Do you ever have those moments where friends say something adamantly, and you are completely bewildered as to why?

This was after I watched Doctor Who this evening with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] explodedteabag, followed by last week's episode of Supernatural, "Abandon All Hope", because [livejournal.com profile] maaseru hadn't seen it - that was fun, too.

Then the part that distressed me: they said something to the effect that I had to admit that the Supernatural episode was much better than the Doctor Who episode. I was flummoxed because I loved Doctor Who so much more. I don't like comparing shows anyway, apples and oranges, different styles, and (obviously) different interpretations of what constitutes "better". I too love Supernatural, and I know they aren't Doctor Who fans - I hope I didn't force a watching of Doctor Who on them, they seemed willing enough.

But if I said I thought Supernatural was better, I'd be lying, so I simply didn't know what to say. It was their certainty that confused me, as if we were suddenly talking different languages with totally different assumptions. I was afraid that if I said anything at all, it would turn into a strong assertion along the lines of "our fandom is better than your fandom" or "you have pretty crappy judgement, really". Doctor Who is an extraordinary show in every way I can measure. Absolutely wonderful. I didn't know what they wanted me to say - well, clearly they wanted me to say Supernatural was better, but why? Because I simply don't think it is.

Ah, well. I'll get over it. And maybe, with thought, understand what they meant.
