Tuesday morning woes...
Oct. 20th, 2009 11:39 pmI woke up this morning feeling great - the aches and pains of the last few days had gone away. So I happily jumped out of bed - and was felled by a spasm of lower back pain. Sitting - or standing, once I was sitting - was excruciating. Last time this happened (in the spring, and it was my upper back then) it took me several weeks to recover.
I was not happy, so I went to my computer to read my e-mail and Livejournal and console myself, and discovered I'd lost my Internet connection. My usual ways of fixing this didn't work. It took more than half an hour of fiddling with wires to get online again.
What more can go wrong this morning, I asked myself? I did my yoga practice conscientiously. Thank goodness no one could see me. Imagine Hatha Yoga done by a robot without joints.
I decided that a good way to cheer up was to invite
So that's what could go wrong next. That hit my sense of humour, and I stopped feeling grumpy about things.
Then a few hours later my back stopped hurting completely. I've been rather cautious in my movements all day, but it seems just fine. We'll see what doing yoga is like tomorrow... but it looks as if I won't have the weeks of pain I was fearing. Right, I tell myself once again: there is nothing to fear but fear.

Date: 2009-10-21 08:44 am (UTC)Hey, hope things are better!
I'm signing up for a yoga class! Starts first week of November, been wanting to really do yoga for years, and am finally going to do it! :-)
*careful hugs* I do hope your back's better soon.

Date: 2009-10-21 12:18 pm (UTC)I did a bit of yoga as a kid (surya namaskar, I think that's what it was called) at our Hindu Sri Venkateswara Temple kids Camp.
I thought it was very cool & have actually been looking for somewhere where they taught it with more of a spiritual/religious aspect. But that's not that easy to find. So, going for just the basic beginner's yoga, I'm assuming its mostly mind/body rather than spiritual or religious.
In any case, I'm sure the mind/body aspects will be cool, and after learning a bit, maybe I can use the books I've got at home or online stuff and learn to incorporate the rest myself. ;-p
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it!
glad your back's better!

Date: 2009-10-21 12:54 pm (UTC)Surya Namaskar is a series of poses translated as Sun Salutation. You can see it here, done by someone who does it a lot better than I do! I like the way this video identifies the parts in faux sanskrit script.

Probably, though you never know. Often a place will have more advanced classes in the philosophy that they don't advertise, held on an irregular basis if there's interest. I once found a good Patanjali study group that way.
I use books at home, anyway. (And if you find good books along the way, let me know!)

Date: 2009-10-21 01:06 pm (UTC)yeah, that's what we used to do. They'd wake us up really early in the morning to do the surya namaskaram and then meditation.
I'm not an early person, but I quite enjoyed it.
I figure if I start out with something (rather than putting it off forever) then I might be in a better position to find out more. :-)
(I don't know if you saw my post from yesterday morning, but it's actually a beginner class specific to that -- good excuse, I thought)
I'll definitely let you know if I find anything good! I've got yoga for dummies (or something like that) and 10 minute yoga, both on sale for cheap, probably not that great, but have not had time to do either, really. Going somewhere, being taught, taking the time out of the day, I think will be really useful to get me going at least.
Tom's agreed, because the timing is 6-7pm on tuesdays for 6 weeks and that's a bit awkward for us-- the boys will go get dinner after they've dropped me off is the plan. ;-)

Date: 2009-10-21 05:27 pm (UTC)Yes, it's a good idea to go for what is available and work from there. I find too that a lot depends on the teacher.

Absolutely!
I was very impressed with Yoga For Dummies - some of the Dummies books are terrible, some are great, and I thought that was one of the better ones. I like Georg Feuerstein's writing. (If I'm correctly remembering which one he wrote! My memory for names seems to have gone through a scrambler.)
Good luck with the time management thing! That's always a hurdle, especially at first, before it becomes a routine.
