Supernatural...
Oct. 15th, 2009 10:43 pmWatched Supernatural 5x06 "I Believe the Children Are Our Future". It reminded me of the other episodes based on children's stories - "Bloody Mary", "Playthings", and "Bedtime Stories". Not their most successful plots, on the whole, though I liked "Bloody Mary", and I liked the way this segued from comedy to the Apocalypse arc.
- Once again, I failed to understand the title. It sounds like a quote. It it another song? Why is it "children" in the plural, when we were only dealing with one child?
- Castiel as an action figure! Complete with knife. Cool. I want one.
- Castiel was sadly incidental.
- My favourite bit: Dean's hairy palms. I liked the flirtation with the nurse, too.
- I liked the theme of being honest with children - or not.
- I liked the story of Jesse's real mother - having a demon's vessel telling her story. We don't usually get it that way round. It was a bit of a jump, though, from the discovery of the kid to the interview with his mother. Shouldn't there have been a little more of a transition there?
- Seemed to me that Sam had a 180o turn-around in temperament and personality compared to last episode. He was intelligent, personable, reasonable, showing neither anger nor self pity. Sam at his best. Dean was the butt of a lot of the humour, but he wasn't crabby. I'd like this to be the status quo.
- The demon child, Jesse, was cute and oddly personable. I would have thought demonspawn would have a taste for nastiness, but apparently Jesse was a clean slate, morally, with free will. Or so the episode seemed to be saying. But demons are bad. And humans... well, okay, ignore the concept of Original Sin: humans have free will, and are corruptible. Moreover, the child is very powerful, and power corrupts. So does the kid really have an even chance?
- If he went to Australia, it makes me think of Neil Gaiman's Lucifer, who retired to an Australian beach to watch the sunsets, God's best work.
- Who was his demon father? Obviously most demons don't father children on mortals. So why him, why then, and will this have repercussions in future?
- Scary, scary tooth fairy.
- Only Dean Winchester would use a whoopee cushion on an angel.
- Only Castiel would let him.
