Those Winchester brothers...
Oct. 15th, 2009 09:26 amI had a thought this morning about Sam and Dean at the end of "Fallen Idol". Sam wants Dean to treat him as an adult and an equal. This seemed unreasonable to me, when a few weeks ago he was saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," and meaning it... and now he's making demands. Hmmph, thought I.
But Dean has never been just a brother to Sam. He brought him up, more than John did. He was a surrogate parent. And between a parent and child, Sam's desire to be treated like a grown-up makes more sense. He has to break away from his old pattern, and the desire to lean on Dean is a temptation he can't afford, and doesn't want.
It makes more sense to me, looked at that way. But I did need to think it through: other people's consideration of the same event just wasn't doing it for me.
