From G. Armour Van Horn, today:
By order of the Canadian Parliament in 1957, today is "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed ... to be observed on the second Monday in October." The first thanksgiving observation in English-speaking North America actually took place in Canada in 1578, it became an annual holiday in 1879.
Religious connotations aside, I like the idea of Thanksgiving. I like the idea of say grace before meals. I like the idea of appreciating other people, or recognizing what is good in life. It isn't a matter of being thankful to anyone, but of being thankful for good things, and being aware of it. It affects the person who is thankful, not the idea or person being thanked. Being loving, or being thankful, enhances life.

So I think Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday.

And in Ottawa, it falls at just about the most beautiful weekend of the year.

Among other things, I'm thankful for Dreamwidth, Livejournal, and my friends, on LJ and otherwise.
