Supernatural: Candy, witches, and a fistful of smiting...

I felt the need of something to lift stress this evening, so I suggested to explodedteabag that we might watch an episode of Supernatural, and she didn't run away screaming. In fact, she stopped killing Orcs in the game she is currently playing, and came down to watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester". I don't really get the title, again - maybe just to indicate it's about Halloween? I suppose we did get some interesting moments about Sam. But I don't really see Castiel as the Great Pumpkin...

How can Dean eat all that candy and still keep his boyish figure?

It was one of those episodes where the actual plot didn't matter much. The villain was a demon named Samhain - which I thought was a cute touch, especially since the Winchesters usually said the name as if it were Sam Hane. But the story, and the Halloween background, just felt like a backdrop to the more interesting theme about Dean, Sam and the Angels. We meet Uriel for the first time, see him sneering at humans. We see Castiel meet Sam for the first time - and shake his hand, just when we thought he wouldn't. (Oh, to read that Angel's mind!) We hear private conversations between Uriel and Castiel, and we hear the Angels threaten to smite a town - well, actually, Uriel threatens, Castiel defends.

And then we get an incredibly cool intimate conversation between Castiel and Dean, in which Castiel confesses his doubts.

Aaaah wonderful.

I watched 3.15 and 3.16 over last night - I'd only seen 3.15 once.

It was interesting - because Dean was so different in those episodes - late season 3 Dean incarnation was a really good version of Dean. I miss that Dean. And Sam offering to live eternally to get Dean to live eternally too, instead of dying. I totally missed that line the first time through. There's a whole lot of fanfic that that line seems to have generated.

I wonder what V 5.0 Dean will be like.

I don't think I've seen any of season 3 more than once - except "Bad Day at Black Rock" (3x03), "Mystery SPot" (3.11) and "Jus in Bello" (3x12). Hmm, more than I thought. I remember thinking 3x15 was really creepy.

I liked Dean then, too - though I don't remember the exact differences. I remember thinking that the writing in season 3 was more and more entrenched in Dean's point of view, possibly as a preparation for season 4, where Sam is more estranged.

I wonder what V 5.0 Dean will be like.

I'm hoping he'll be protective of Sam. (Because I like that.)

I remember thinking 3x15 was really creepy.

It is really creepy. I hadn't like it much the first time through - I liked it much better this time.

Also, 3.16 really foreshadows 4.22 - it's all there in nuce.

It's tempting to go back to season 3... but I am so enjoying perusing season 4, now it's out on DVD. And season 5 only a day away.

I love the way there are traces of the themes and plot to come laid very early on - invisible at the time, but satisfying now.

It's the end of my watch through - which I started at the beginning of the hiatus - and then got
hung up entirely on 3.15 which is ironic, since I liked it much better this time.

I rewatched most of season 4 as they showed it on tv this summer - just missed some once
they started doubling them up and when I was busy with other things.

My rewatching has been more sporadic, since I've been watching Buffy more and Supernatural less. I keep gravitating to season 4, because it's my favourite.

Maybe another Supernatural video-party would be a good idea!
