Some days it feels better to be a fan than other days. This was one of those days it felt good; in part because Thamiris asked an interesting question about Lex on the ClarkLex list, and there were interesting answers. Not only that, but a few friends I hadn't heard from in a while got in touch to make private comments, so that was fun, too.

I had the impression that the sense of 'community' was slipping in Smallville fandom; that enough time has passed for many people's initial infatuation to fade, and for rivalries or sniping to sour people one each other, and for enthusiasm to simply fade. People seemed more likely to complain about the lack of CLex in second season than to talk about what has been, might be, and ought to be there.

And then there people were, talking again, and with some enthusiasm - all because of a good question.

Or maybe, all because of our shared love of Lex Luthor and Michael Rosenbaum.

Just wait till we get a Clark Kent/Tom Welling question.

Browsing a few livejournals (as I was doing yesterday), I noticed that Koi had been at Escapade. If I talked to her, I didn't realize who she was; I'd have loved to have thanked her for writing my favourite story in Smallville fandom, "A Nice, Friendly Game". Just as I don't think I ever really got around to telling Destina Fortunato how very much I loved her story "Prophet of Eden", no doubt my second favourite story in Smallville fandom. This is a fandom full of many rich and wonderful stories; but those two stand out to me as particularly wonderful, and fun to reread. They are stories that go beyond the normal.

These writers awe me.

And I must find more time to write letters of comment.

Hi, Elizabeth,

I felt the same way about Thamiris' question. It really got people thinking and talking again.

Maybe it should be a "weekly" question: i.e., what favorite Lex moment do you have to share THIS WEEK! We could keep that one going for a long time!

Alison mentioned that you were writing in your journal again, so I thought I'd say hi.

I've certainly noticed the sniping recently, and a few people have said that they were going to fade out of the fandom because of the lack of Clex this season. On the other hand, other authors have gradually become exclusively Clex, or been drawn to writing recently purely because of the inspiration from Smallville, so I feel sure that it's just a natural flux. And in many ways I see that as good, as preventing a stagnant fandom.

Yeah, stagnation would be a bad thing - it is a bad thing in any fandom. I was feeling frustrated by the lack of real discussion on the list: the interesting conversations seemed to all be going on in livejournals that I either didn't know about or had no time to access and read. I'm glad to see that some people want to talk on the list as well now.

The only thing is, it and several of my lists are being extremely interesting all at once and I don't have the time to keep up - let alone to keep up and keep writing at the same time! That isn't a complaint... just a gentle whimper. I like the state of affairs.
