Death Wish

The dead ought to move on, but Owen couldn't. It was fucking unfair, was what it was. He was a ghost, a rat trapped in a cage.

Jack was no help. "You've died a hundred times," complained Owen, inaccurately. "You're the expert. What's supposed to happen?"

"I couldn't even die properly the first time," said Jack. "I'm no expert. I come back alive. I don't know anything about other people's deaths. If you want reassurance, find a priest."

"I'm scared," said Owen.

"I know." Jack touched his shoulder, kindly.

When the nuclear explosion took him, Owen waited for oblivion, fearless.
