Secret Invasion...
Jul. 2nd, 2009 09:30 pmRead the Marvel crossover event of last year, Secret Invasion by Brian Michael Bendis. Great fun for an old Marvel junkie like me; lots of nice plot twists, lots of long-lost characters, lots of character angst. Basic plot: shape-changing Skrulls invade earth by impersonating humans, including many superheroes, teammates, and family members - familiar Marvel characters. Some excellent art, too.
Best moments:
- The return of Nick Fury. Nick Fury! Missing for a long time. (Explanations still to come at the end of this one.) Nicely set up with a scene at the beginning of the story between Dum Dum Dugan and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine; Dum Dum thought Fury had run off with her, she said she had no idea where he was. She turns out to be a Skrull impostor, fishing for info. Cool.
- Wonderful scene where brave, valiant gay boy Teddy Altman - who also happens to be a Skrull prince - faces the invading Skrulls and gets attacked. Wiccan springs to his rescue. Loved it! Teddy and Billy are among my favourite comic book couples and it's always a treat to see them.
- Scary, scary scene when Jessica leaves her baby with Jarvis - and we learn that he is a Skrull. But she doesn't know. "Baby couldn't be safer." Chilling.
- Loved the "Embrace Change" ads. Paid for by Skrulls.
- There was a line I loved because of its continuity. They Skrulls weren't invading because they wanted territory or to enslave Earth; it was revenge for "the joke about the cows". Back in Fantastic Four #2 in 1962, Reed Richards tricked a group of Skrulls into becoming placid grazing cows.
