From Chicago...
Jun. 5th, 2009 01:47 pmWhen I heard the news yesterday that John Barrowman couldn't be at Torchsong, I was in mild shock at first.
Then, I confess, when I got over the shock it seemed funny - not funny that a man I love and admire was badly hurt, or that another man I love and admire had a personal heartbreak - but it seemed a terrific joke on myself. Cosmic joke, you know? Expectations go awry. Life throws curves.
Then they announced that Peter Wingfield would be here.
Well. I can't think of many actors I'd come this far to see, but Barrowman and Wingfield certainly top my list. So - despite disappointment over John Barrowman, and concern for his welfare and his ligaments1, I am thrilled to be seeing Peter Wingfield in person. For the first time ever. And I've wanted to meet him for years. Just never had the opportunity to go to any of the far-flung Highlander conventions.
Too bad I didn't bring any of my Highlander stuff for an autograph. But ... maybe in the dealers' room? If they learned he'd be here soon enough?
And unsurprisingly, Torchwood fans and John Barrowman fans are a terrific bunch. There's been disappointment and distress, but people are being reasonable. And having fun. It's still a big fannish party.

1 And very pretty ligaments they must be.

A show with both Barrowman and WIngfield? I'd know then I'd died and gone to heaven.

Date: 2009-06-05 10:49 pm (UTC)I'd much rather - on an order of magnitude in the 100s - see Peter Wingfield than John Barrowman anyway.
Though Barrowman I expect could easily prove more amusing in a group setting. In the roles I like him, Wingfield tends to play it a bit taciturn and melancholi except when he's being badass.
Was the other guy you were referring to also supposed to appear at the con and cancelled?

Date: 2009-06-10 07:52 pm (UTC)Wingfield - in person or in his roles - seems much more reserved than Barrowman, but then again, isn't everyone?
The other person who wasn't there was Kai Owen, who plays Rhys on Torchwood. His girlfriend just had a miscarriage.
