Acquainted with the Night...

trialia reminded me that this is National Poetry month in both the US and Canada. Despite the fact that I don't actually approve of assigning items like this to months, it's an excuse to reread some of my favourite poetry, and possibly find new favourites. I am guiltily reminded that I told janne_d that I planned to post a poem every Friday, and haven't done it. Yet.

Let's start with Robert Frost: American, 1874-1963:

Acquainted With the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat,
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

I first heard this read by Ron Perlman on _Beauty & The Beast_. That *voice*! He turned lots & lots of women on to poetry [among other things ;)].
