Castle, Flowers for Your Grave...

Over the past twenty-four hours I watched the first four episodes of Castle and thoroughly enjoyed it in just about every way I can think of. It's fluffy, but it's clever fluff. It's fun. I like the characters. There may not be a lot of depth, but there is a lot of feeling.

So: the Ten Things I like about Castle:

1. Nathan Fillion, getting his style back. Some actors are superb at playing villains. Fillion is not. He's at his best in roles like this; where he can lay on the charm, make mistakes and rectify them, a kid-at-heart-hero whose intentions are of the best.
   
   
2. Rick Castle. Reminiscent of Bruce Willis in Moonlighting, but I like him better. I like authors as heroes.
   
   
3. Kate Beckett. Great name. I like her hair. I like her loads more than Maddy in Moonlighting. I like her cop-demeanour, I like her dialogue, and if sometimes she protests too much about Castle, well, that's all part of the genre.
   
   
4. By the fourth episode, I've really come to love Esposito, Ryan, Parish and Montgomery. Their roles are underplayed and I had to look up their names, but they're individualistic, amusing, and delightfully in character as the back-up characters who double as straight men.
   
   
5. Alexis Castle, who looks a little like a fourteen-year-old friend of mine and whose personality sometimes reminds me of me at that age. A nice break from the teen stereotypes, and the annoying teens, and the loud teens, and she makes for good bits of humour, compassion, and exposition.
   
   
6. I like the combination of old-fashioned deduction and new technology.
   
   
7. I like it that each episode has a self-contained plot.
   
   
8. I like the 'little business' of mini subplots, like the coffee machine, and Alexis' school trip, and the release of Castle's latest novel.
   
   
9. I like Becket's mixture of trepidation and interest that Nicky Heat is based on her.
   
   
10. I like it that when they focus on the case, Castle and Beckett work so well together.

I'm enjoying Castle more than Dollhouse. Both of which are being watched because of the Firefly connections.

I also like Castle's mother. The 3-generation family interactions are amusing and interesting.

She's really quite delightful, and knowing her explains a lot about why Castle is as he is.

I like Castle because of Nathan Fillion, the snappy repartee, Nathan Fillion, Castle's family, Nathan Fillion, Castle and Beckett's relationship, and, oh, Nathan Fillion.

He's so good at this one. He just makes me grin.

I've been meaning to write a post about it. I just haven't gotten to it.

I like Castle for all the same reasons you do. Especially Nathan Fillion.

He makes me grin, too. I love it that his mischief never goes too far. And I like it that he's a thinking hero, not an action hero.

Actually, I think the part I like best is Castle's relationship with his daughter. That bit in the third episode where he was all worried about her because of those awful kids they were investigating and he asks her if she's ever done drugs, and the only thing she can come up with that she wishes she hadn't done was jumping the turnstile on the subway was just adorable.

He makes a Really Cute Daddy [g].

Castle is a wonderful father, which does a lot to make him such an endearing hero.

I couldn't help think Moonlighting either. And that made me superhappy! His daughter is awesome - refreshing change fromthe smartass teen kid we see everywhere today. And when she told him the truth in the third eppy? How sweet was she?

That is just so true. She's delightful - but with nothing annoyingly pretentious about her.

That was all so sincere. And I could really feel for her. I remember being young and worrying about things the adults didn't take seriously.

I think the shows I like are always iffy - except maybe Doctor Who in the UK. That's okay. I can enjoy it while it lasts.

I've caught the first 3 eps & enjoyed them, but may have to see them again to catch up [such hardship! ;)]. The problem is, the show's on Monday night, opposite ze spouse's wrestling, "Medium", & usually at least another show. Our dvr only has 2 timeslots. Thank goodness for the option of watching it on the computer!
