I had a long list of things to do today. Did some of them. But, sadly, felt as if my cold had come back with a vengeance and spent most of the afternoon asleep. But I did wash dished, do laundry - and what's even better, but it all away - bought some kitchen stuff, went for an hour's walk in the gently falling snow, and read. Also watched an old episode of Star Trek with Catherine, [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi - "Arena". It had some nice Spock-McCoy dialogue. It astounds me to say so, because back in my ST fannish days I didn't like McCoy at all. I must be mellowing.

Interested in walking together or else meeting up somewhere for coffee tomorrow?

Haven't seen you in FAR too long...

It's been ages! Looks less snowy than yesterday... Yeah, that would be fun. Want to get together for a fannish evening a well?

I always thought Spock/McCoy would make a lovely pairing. :)

I've known many who thought that. Because I'd never liked McCoy, and thought K/S was just fine, I always just ignored it. But now I can see the point: they have that warmth/scrappiness that makes for great pairings.

I dunno. It's a situation tailor-made for polyamory.

I hadn't seen an episode for ages, before last night. We were joking we'd all lose our geek licences, because once upon a time we could have named any episode, and now we're having trouble remembering which is which.

Thats one licence I don't want to lose LOL......I know the other night we were talking about TNG episodes "Best of both worlds" Part 1 & 2 and it took me about 15 min. to remember the name which isn't a good thing =( I need to brush up on my Trek!!

I wasn't big on McCoy when I was a kid, but now that I'm older and wiser, he's probably my favourite of the main characters! He's really much needed balance/ballast. I could never stand Kirk.

I am always ambivalent about Kirk. It's Spock who reaches my heart. Kirk... I tolerated him, liked him, loved him for Spock's sake, sometimes disliked him, sometimes talked myself into liking him.... This is probably why I didn't write more K/S than I did.

McCoy is possibly an acquired taste? I used to think him shallow and one-noted. A sort of acerbic comic relief. Now I'm not so sure. Or at least... willing to reopen the issue.

My dad was a Trek fan and so I grew up watching these from a wee babe; they're like a part of the family in a way, so my impressions were formed from pre-verbal states, I think! I will say Kirk taught me "chauvinist pig" before I even knew such a thing existed. It's funny that I never liked him, although I could understand why as I got older.

Spock is the one I want to love, but he doesn't quite touch my heart. Not quite sure why. It may be an acting thing — although I adore Leonard Nimoy. (I do sometimes wonder what would have happened with Martin Landau.)

On the other hand, I always liked McCoy, but as I got older, I saw a richer character, someone with real life experience. The guy who seems a bit of a smartass and pretends to be self-sufficient, but is genuinely a good guy (just don't tell anybody) is one of my favourite character types. Take it too far (see House) and I seriously doubt there's a good guy in there (I really despise that character, despite my love of Hugh Laurie); at that point I lose interest. But Nine and Ray Vecchio both have that in common. Actually, come to think of it, Charles Winchester from M*A*S*H fits the bill, too, and I always loved him even when I wanted to brain Hawkeye.

LOL. There's a certain justice there.

I had forgotten my love for Spock until recently I saw a few glimpses of him, and then, this episode last night. He's lovely.

I'll have to watch more to see what I think of McCoy now. I think I dismissed him as too much of a smart-ass or a carper, or at least, someone who hides his true self and masks his compassion with something else. And I didn't know why he was doing that. Or maybe I was just miffed because he treated Spock critically.

I don't much like Hugh Laurie; I do like House, more or less, but don't like the show much. Too formulaic. I suspect if I watched the show more I would dislike House, but I don't feel tempted anyway.

But Nine and Ray Vecchio both have that in common.

Interesting observation. I didn't think I ever considered that Nine might have anything at all in common with McCoy. I still can't see it, but that's perhaps the habit of decades of totally ignoring McCoy because I didn't like him. I will think about it as I watch.

Hawkeye was played by Alan Alda, right? I didn't like him and seldom watched M*A*S*H for that reason. I think I liked the other guy (whose name I don't even know). Mostly I remember Radar.
