Walking in the snow and Star Trek...
Mar. 9th, 2009 10:03 pmI had a long list of things to do today. Did some of them. But, sadly, felt as if my cold had come back with a vengeance and spent most of the afternoon asleep. But I did wash dished, do laundry - and what's even better, but it all away - bought some kitchen stuff, went for an hour's walk in the gently falling snow, and read. Also watched an old episode of Star Trek with Catherine,

Date: 2009-03-10 07:23 pm (UTC)McCoy is possibly an acquired taste? I used to think him shallow and one-noted. A sort of acerbic comic relief. Now I'm not so sure. Or at least... willing to reopen the issue.

Date: 2009-03-11 01:31 am (UTC)Spock is the one I want to love, but he doesn't quite touch my heart. Not quite sure why. It may be an acting thing — although I adore Leonard Nimoy. (I do sometimes wonder what would have happened with Martin Landau.)
On the other hand, I always liked McCoy, but as I got older, I saw a richer character, someone with real life experience. The guy who seems a bit of a smartass and pretends to be self-sufficient, but is genuinely a good guy (just don't tell anybody) is one of my favourite character types. Take it too far (see House) and I seriously doubt there's a good guy in there (I really despise that character, despite my love of Hugh Laurie); at that point I lose interest. But Nine and Ray Vecchio both have that in common. Actually, come to think of it, Charles Winchester from M*A*S*H fits the bill, too, and I always loved him even when I wanted to brain Hawkeye.

Date: 2009-03-11 02:04 am (UTC)LOL. There's a certain justice there.
I had forgotten my love for Spock until recently I saw a few glimpses of him, and then, this episode last night. He's lovely.
I'll have to watch more to see what I think of McCoy now. I think I dismissed him as too much of a smart-ass or a carper, or at least, someone who hides his true self and masks his compassion with something else. And I didn't know why he was doing that. Or maybe I was just miffed because he treated Spock critically.
I don't much like Hugh Laurie; I do like House, more or less, but don't like the show much. Too formulaic. I suspect if I watched the show more I would dislike House, but I don't feel tempted anyway.
But Nine and Ray Vecchio both have that in common.
Interesting observation. I didn't think I ever considered that Nine might have anything at all in common with McCoy. I still can't see it, but that's perhaps the habit of decades of totally ignoring McCoy because I didn't like him. I will think about it as I watch.
Hawkeye was played by Alan Alda, right? I didn't like him and seldom watched M*A*S*H for that reason. I think I liked the other guy (whose name I don't even know). Mostly I remember Radar.
