Writer's Block: Dressed to Impress

In recent years I've been frustrated with the Academy Awards, and didn't watch. I don't see many movies these days, and don't recognize most of the celebrities. Crash a few years ago was a last straw for me; I thought it was an awful movie, and it won "Best Movie". And for a few years, the Awards ceremony bored me.
So I didn't watch last night, but this evening
maaseru and
maaboroshi showed me highlights, and I did love seeing Hugh Jackman do his musical theatre review. Great fun.
Best outfit, male: I thought Frank Langella looked terrific. (I always do.)
Worst outfit, male: Mickey Rourke. Huh. He has a style all his own.
Best outfit, female: Marisa Tomei. In general, I liked the dresses more than I usually do, though I don't much like strapless dresses. Amy Adams was a close second, and Miley Cyrus gets a special nod because her dress had straps. I liked Meryl Streep's look.
Worst outfit, female: Sophia Loren, with a few frills to many.
Best voice: Tilda Swinton
Best dance: Beyonce Knowles
Best line: "I am Wolverine."

I need to find a clip of Tilda somewhere... she's not aware of it, but she's my girlfriend. :-)

Date: 2009-02-26 02:24 pm (UTC)I think what kept me from it was a general lack of fondness for Virigina Wolff's writing.

Date: 2009-02-25 05:57 am (UTC)OTOH, Tilda was brilliant as one of the villains in _Michael Clayton_.

Date: 2009-02-24 10:13 am (UTC)Special for us Australians as Hugh Jackman was host and Heath Ledger won best supporting actor.

Date: 2009-02-25 12:07 am (UTC)There are a lot of Aussie actors in Hollywood.
I don't think so.

Date: 2009-02-25 12:20 am (UTC)Not a bad contender, though People magazine (I think?) thought it was Matt Damon - which I don't understand at all. Jackman is a much better choice.
Though my #1 would be different - !

Date: 2009-02-25 02:15 am (UTC)I liked Crash. I don't think it was the Best Movie, but I liked it. I thought it showed how lives unknowingly inter-connect and the raw side of people when they don't think others are listening. I think it was pretty American in tone though.

Date: 2009-02-25 02:26 am (UTC)Yes. Very funny. And charming at the same time. I loved it when Jackman said he hadn't had time to see "The Reader" - and hadn't wanted to stand in line.
I thought Crash was sort of dumb and boring.... And I mostly didn't like the characters.

Date: 2009-02-25 06:18 am (UTC)I didn't see the show itself (no time and it was fairly obvious who would win), but I was very glad Milk did quite well; Sean Penn deserved the best actor award, and the script was brilliant.
I did look at the dresses later on imdb.com.
I though Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Jessica Biel looked quite dreadful. Their dresses were overcomplicated and badly shaped: Beyonce looked like a flower vase, I swear. And Mickey Rourke: how un-suave can you get!
Marisa Tomei, Meryl Streep, Robin Wright Penn, Viola Davis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, and Anne Hathaway OTOH looked gorgeous -- and quite comfortable too, at least as much as you can be in an Oscar gown.

Date: 2009-02-25 01:29 pm (UTC)I was disappointed because it was by Paul Haggis - whose writing I quite like on Due South.
I was glad Milk did well, but I still haven't seen it. I hope it stays around in the theatres a bit now, having got an award.
I thought Jessica Biel looked beautiful but I confess I don't remember her dress now. Sarah Jessica Parker looked odd; I've never liked her taste in clothes.
Marisa Tomei was quite stunning.
I liked Amy Adams' dress, but it was pointed out by at least one commentator as a disaster, comparing it to Spider-Man's costume. I must admit I don't know who Amy Adams is. (I think she was in "Doubt".)
I'm not sure about comfort in an Oscar gown, but I'm pretty sure no one could be comfortable in Oscar shoes.
