happiness is something you have to work for and that doesn't just fall from the sky.

I'm not sure 'work' is the word I'd use; it's a matter of training (or practising?) the attitude and taking certain steps with your life. I've known people deathly ill with cancer who were happier than people with good jobs and a nice family. Depends how you take what you have. A lot of it is sheer luck - having the right neurochemical balances not to be bipolar or depressed, and being relatively free of physical pain - and a lot of it is making an effort, or learning how to cultivate it, and that sort of thing.

Being laid back is hard to control, too. Similar thing. Can't do it when you're depressed, but there are measures one can take.

I've never been stuck on an elevator either, I'm happy to say. I have been stuck waiting for the slow ones, though!

No, work isn't the right word for it. What I mean(t) to say: Making an effort to make your life as happy as you can under your circumstances and working (there it is again) on the attitude are important factors when it comes to happiness. Chemistry can screw all that up, but. It's definitely worth the effort to be happy.

I usually take the stairs, except for in buildings where there are no stairs or when I have luggage, so for the most part I was able to avoid being stuck (in or waiting for) so far.

I used to always take the stairs - I can recall taking the stairs once to see my English professor on the 19th floor of the Arts Tower (now the Davidson Dunton tower) at Carleton University. I was so out of breath when I got to his office, I couldn't talk. But I particularly disliked the temperamental elevators in the building.

Usually I only walk if it's less than 10 floors, but I still get grumbly and impatient when I have to wait for an elevator. I don't like the elevator experience much. They make me impatient. I have three minor phobias - not really fears, but things I don't like much - heights, enclosed spaces, and mirrors. Elevators often manage two of these at once, and there's always the impatience of waiting.

So I like to walk up stairs. Since breaking my ankle I haven't done it so much, because it is more difficult. But... it's time to start again, I think. Yes.

How well does walking stairs work for you with the ankle, though?
... I suppose it's a question of what's worse- elevator or walking stairs. I hope it'll be the elevator and that walking stairs won't cause you any pain! :)

Walking up and down stairs is exactly the kind of exercise I should be doing for my foot. It's still very stiff and I really notice it on stairs. It isn't very painful now, just very stiff, making me thump like a stormtrooper because I lack control of the footstep. I'd rather glide like a gazelle.

Well then! Er. Get on with the stair-walking?
