Sexual Fantasy
They were messing about, the way they did. Gwen teased Rhys about his pash for Angelina Jolie, which he didn't try to deny, and he said, "So who do you fantasize about?"
Gwen didn't even stop to think. "Jack."
There was a sudden silence. "Uh-oh," she thought. She was usually careful, talking to Rhys about Jack. She couldn't think of anything to say to fix it.
On the other hand, she was being honest, as she'd promised him she'd be.
Rhys laughed. "He has you all under his spell, doesn't he?"
Gwen allowed herself to blush, and Rhys hugged her.

Date: 2009-02-18 05:14 pm (UTC)Hee - so did she.
Fortunately Rhys is a very easy-going guy and let this one go!
Luckily. I'm sure he's worried about it, when he lets himself be. But meanwhile - he has Gwen, so he can afford to be cool about Jack.
Thanks for commenting!

Date: 2009-02-18 07:09 pm (UTC)Which raises a question I find interesting, and should maybe write a fic about: how much does Rhys know about Jack's sexual orientation? Or his history? Does he know he's immortal and from the future? He hear him asking Jack "you're not gay, you?" but we don't hear Jack's answer. Did he evade ("quaint categories"), or did he say, "Hey, no, I'm flexible!"
Or has Gwen told him everything she knows about Jack? Including about his relationships with Estelle and Ianto? Or has she just said that Ianto was his boyfriend and left it at that, for Rhys to conclude Jack isn't interested in women?
Come to think of it, I'm working on a story that will cover this very thing, at least in a fan-fictional context. Maybe. We shall see.

Date: 2009-02-18 08:35 pm (UTC)Rhys always seems to be the rock for Gwen at the cost to himself (end of Adrift for example where he again puts her first) and although he stands up to her, he knows her and knows what she needs.

I think Jack and Gwen would be a disaster because she needs to be needed whilst Jack needs someone to look after him, who considers his needs, not just his own - which Ianto does.
I think Gwen and Jack would be terrific together; though very volatile. I don't see it lasting but they'd be nicely matched. Ianto and Jack are a different sort of couple, and while Ianto is in many ways what Jack needs (at least for now), I'm not sure whether Jack is what Ianto needs. I don't yet understand Ianto well enough; I think he needs someone to take care of, and there's a limit to how much Jack needs nurturing, as he is a nurturing personality himself.
Meanwhile it's loads of fun to watch.
Yes, I think Rhys is a rock for Gwen. I think he'd do anything for her because the main thing for him is not losing her - he'd do whatever it takes to keep he. And to take care of her. Yes, another nurturer. While she, like Jack with Ianto, puts excitement and meaning in his life. He's very proud of her, and I love that. But he must worry like mad whenever she's working, which is most of the time.

Date: 2009-02-19 05:58 am (UTC)Jack may just be what Ianto needs - Ianto needs to feel needed to a degree (and he's getting appreciated now which is important)and Ianto knows that he'll never lose Jack to death (again possibly important after Lisa). I don't see Jack as that nurturing actually - that's why he got Gwen to join in the first place. Jack has a purpose, defending the earth, and everything else comes second to that.
It's tricky as this is love and work lives meshing up.
Rhys is the only one not in Torchwood and he's the type of anchor they all need (not just Gwen) which is why Jack always encouraged her to keep that link.

Date: 2009-02-19 01:45 pm (UTC)But as things stand, they are not lovers, so you can't judge by that. And Jack's good at holding his own. I think they'd have as much hope as any loving pair would, and they have compatible goals. She's something of a Jack acolyte, and it's good for him to be personally challenged from time to time. (Ianto challenges him sometimes, but usually not directly. Well... maybe at gunpoint, which doesn't count.)
(look at how vulnerable it made her and Owen and how it affected them)
Well, yes, but Owen was using her and didn't care - he isn't a nurturing personality. (Though he was with Katy. I guess that experience burned it out of him.) Anyway - I liked that subplot. Once I got over my horror. ("Owen? She's doing it with Owen?")
Ianto needs to feel needed to a degree
Very much so.
Ianto knows that he'll never lose Jack to death (again possibly important after Lisa)
True, but he has other fears about Jack.
I see Jack as very nurturing; but in a multifaceted way. I agree that 'defending Earth' comes first for him, and he's capable of stifling his nurturing impulses pragmatically at as needs arise, but they're still there. I know this is a point on which I disagree with a lot of fans, which is why a lot of the fanfic about Jack looks out of character to me. I think they just don't understand him. [g]
Jack's life, his love, and his work are not separable in his mind and feelings. He doesn't see the love/work dichotomy that others do. He's had lovers at Torchwood before Ianto.
I agree that Rhys is good for everyone. Nor would I want him and Gwen to break up, or for her to leave him for Jack. (Heaven forbid!) But I would like to see Jack and Gwen as lovers.
