Date: 2009-02-06 08:23 am (UTC)One of the solo songs I used to practice (when I was taking singing lessons, far too many years ago) began with those lines. Also included were:
An arrant liar, fed by desire,
It is -- and yet it is not.
Love's fair and mellow -- clad oft in yellow,
The cankerworm of the mind.
A privy mischief, and such a sly thief
No-one knows which way to find.
I often think that kind of emotion plays games with us -- and is the ultimate example of the tail trying to "wag the dog." Sigh ... I just wish it were not so *pleasurable*. :-)

Those lyrics do capture the emotional roller coaster sense of love. But... even with its paradoxical nature, that's only a fraction of the complexities of love. It might be that. Or not.
No wonder we're all confused about it.
