I just looked up the next Doctor Who companion, who looked vaguely familiar. I got a shock: of course she was familiar! I was watching her on Sunday, and frequently before that. Michelle Ryan was Nimueh on Merlin.

And she's gorgeous.

(Can I start fantasizing about her and Captain Jack yet?)

She was awesome in Jekyll too.

Oooh - I didn't see Jekyll, but I'd like to. This is extra incentive!

She also played the new Bionic Woman which only lasted for one series.

she was good in that even though I lost interest halfway through.

I heard the show wasn't very good - but that probably wasn't her fault.

Who's the new Doctor? I mean, I've seen his picture and his name -- but has he done anything of interest? ;-)

I don't know this woman. But I'm looking forward to the new series!

I've seen him in two things. One was an episode of Secret Diary of a Call Girl that I thought was quite cute. (Belle picks up a cute stranger for some freebie sex and he doesn't go home afterwards. Since he's not a client, she doesn't feel she should just rudely kick him out - and he's obviously seeing himself in a boyfriend role.)

Michelle Ryan will just be in one of the specials - but I think she'll be fun.

Oops: I forgot to say what the other thing was that I saw Matt Smith in. It as a Victorian mystery called "The Ruby in the Smoke". I didn't like the story much, but I did like him - he was very personable and heroic in a low-key way.

Interesting that in both shows I saw, he was playing with Billie Pyper as the female lead.

The majority of Brits aren't so pleased. She's very well know from her role as Zoe Slater in Eastenders (very popular British Soap) and hasn't the greatest reputation as an actress or as a particularly nice person in RL. There is a general consensus that she is very beautiful, though.

But then again, I there was a bit of an uproar when they cast Billie Piper (pop princess!) and now she's a national treasure!

Was Zoe Slater a sympathetic character?

I'd say "give her a chance". I expected Catherine Tate to be awful after "The Runaway Bride", and I liked her is series 4. So much is in the script and direction, anyway.

And yes, Billie Pyper surprised everyone - and good for her!

Yes, I would say she was sympathetic, but I think her character ultimately reacted to situations and only reacted, which was somewhat frustrating. Also, her character's mother and step father (Kat and Alfie) were very popular characters who were played by character actors who embodied the role completely, so Zoe/Michelle was seen as 'weaker' in comparison.

I say give her a chance too, and I hope she's good if only because it'll be a long time after it airs until the next episode!

I think one of the reasons I'm so sanguine (besides that I like her looks, especially since I've now seen a few photos of her in the role) - is that I don't really care whether I like the companion in a special or not. Whatever she's like, it's a one-shot thing. I've liked some of the companions in the specials (Astrid, Rose) and haven't particularly liked others (Donna, Jackson) and that's okay. It doesn't make or break the show. Though admittedly, "The Runaway Bride" is my least favourite of the specials, mostly because Donna was so screechy in it... Hmm. Okay, it affects the whole, but it's a combination of factors, and cumulative effect.

Bottom line - I'll know what I think of her when I see her in the role!

This casting news doesn't fill me with excitement but I'm going to give the girl a chance and wait and see.

She hasn't blown me away in the other stuff I've seen her in but I haven't seen her in a lot. She made little impression (good or bad) on me in Jekyll but with different writing on Who she could be amazing.

You know, it's almost all in the writing. I'd never have believed Catherine Tate would delight me so much as Donna. I never would have believed how I'd come to love and admire Rose. So - it depends what they do with her. I hope for the best!

Agreed it's all in the writing:D

Thank you - what nice pictures! I like her outfit, which reminds me of what Martha wore in "The Last of the Time Lords". Reminiscent of Mrs. Peel, too.

I think the reason Michelle Ryan looks attractive to me is that she reminds me of Michelle Forbes, whom I adore.
