Writer's Block: Open Arms

Can't say I have. I tend to be shy with the hugging.
...Wait. I do remember a time. I was in High School, probably about fourteen years old, and we went on a field trip to a hospital for... I don't remember what it was called, but it was for people born with serious congenital defects, the severe end of mental retardation, microcephalia, that sort of thing. A lot of the residents were badly deformed. One of the girls there darted out of her room, saw me with the group in the hallway, ran right over to me, and gave me a big bear hug.
I was startled but it was so clearly a random affectionate impulse from someone who needed kindness, I hugged her back warmly. She ran off, happy. My teacher later said to me, "You handled that well." Did I? I was rather shaken, as the girl was strange-looking, but my heart was breaking for all of them there. The visit made quite an impression on me.
