Perhaps for being the last President before Obama?

And right there? I can tell you're not an American. Not a dig, just an observation on your PoV. :)

Heh. True.

Are you saying that an American's observations would be more outspoken than?

Definitely more outspoken. Look at the other answers, haha.

Pan's Labyrinth comes in mind for this. "Your son will not know your name." Too bad we can't say, "History will not remember your name." :)

The most positive spin I've seen on it is that his presidency laid the groundwork to make Obama possible. In other words, things were so bad that people were willing to take a bigger chance than usual. I think that seriously underrates Obama's personal qualities, particularly of intelligence, reflection, and stability, but then, could he be more of a contrast?

Sounds like a good summation... Bad things happened, so good things can? (Hold that thought.)

I always hesitate to talk about Americans and American politics, since I am not one of them.

I have a lot of problems with what is happening in the world just now.
Obama seems the one good thing to have come up in a while.

It would be fabulous irony? divine retribution? justice? if we were able to get universal healthcare out of this mess by using the "shock doctrine" against the conservatives. I really, really hope that can happen, because it will ease up so many aspects of what is going wrong.

Understandable. I'm dual residency UK/US, with a strong friends base in Canada, so I feel sort of generally "Anglophone", but I'm also a Southerner in the US, and some of the idiocy that gets spewed by "Yankees" about how people are in the South drive me crazy. What one can see from the outside is so different from what's going on on the inside.

Obama seems the one good thing to have come up in a while.

It's funny, it's the rightwingers who keep saying his supporters think of him as a "Messiah" - maybe some of them do, but I don't see it in the behaviour. It's easier for me to see Palin as a little Hitler in training, honestly, and it's not just the conservative politics, it's the "Kill him" and "real" vs. "fake" nationalist rhetoric that can get whipped up in a frenzy in an audience. How does Obama whip people up? "Yes we can!" So different. (I've always made a distinction that conservatives are about "us" and liberals are about "we" - it's a simplification, of course, but almost everything can be reduced to that dichotomy.)

But I think the combination of positive thinking (thinking, period!) and reflective problem-solving is the best we can hope for in a leader. And being able to speak does matter. Plus, I'm so glad to be having a President who doesn't embarrass me on the international stage. Bush was humiliating - doubly so, since I'm a native Texan and he's sooooooo not.

He will be remembered for a lot of bad things.

I have to tape the inauguration tonight because it's on here at like 3 o'clock in the morning.

Still the prompt for tw100 this week is politics.

The reason is because of what is happening today, well Wednesday morning my time. to celebrate Obama's inauguration.

I don't mind as I already have an idea. Though it will be written tomorrow.

Tact is my middle name. Well, actually, my middle name is Margaret.

I wouldn't want to say in an international forum what I thought of George Bush.

I think a fitting epitaph is what the Dalai Lama (http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2009/01/dalai-lama-stuns-audience-admits-i-love.html) said yesterday:

The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile left the audience stunned when he said "I love President George W Bush." He went on to add how he and the US President instantly struck a chord in their first meeting unlike politicians who take a while to develop close ties.

But of course historically he'll be remembered for his incredible backbone on holding firm on winning the Iraq war against the advice of advisors and everyone spouting conventional wisdom and urging defeat.

Well, I'm a native American and I think he will be remembered as one of our worst presidents. His administration was more corrupt than Warren G. Harding, more inept than the no-name presidents that followed Lincoln and gave us a bad name and a worse reputation around the world. Thousands of dead, billions in debt, the environment trashed...the sad, sorry list goes on and on.
And - let's be clear. He wasn't truly elected. The first election was "decided" by the Supreme Court which was borderline illegal. The second election was stolen via hijacked ballot boxes, throwing out millions of African-American votes and just plain theft. We've had dishonest Presidents before. We've had inept Presidents before. But this guy topped them all and then some.

Thanks for clarifying about the Bush election. It explains... some of the things that were perplexing me.

I can agree about the reputation part.

I take it you're happy about Obama - ?
