the only time I used a similar phrase was when I had to tell my parents my sister had taken an overdose...

Ouch! That's a difficult one.

I think it is perhaps one of the most difficult things I've done ever. More so because my sister had broken of contact with my parents and didn't want to see them.

Fortunately, it ended up well. My sister did no damage to herself (not physically) and not much later she did want to see my parents again. (Not that it didn't take a long while to heal the rift).
