[livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi and I took a taxi to the hospital to visit [livejournal.com profile] maaseru from about 3 p.m. to about 8 p.m., which is what the visiting hours are. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi brought a string of coloured star-shaped lights to hang over [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's bed, which made it look festive. She has almost no room around her bed - her bedside table has to go sideways and there's no room for our chairs beside her, though we made room anyway.

We then proceeded to create delicate mayhem, and I do think a good time was had by all. Helped, in [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's case, by double doses of Percocet. But we got to see her walk, with her walker, to the bathroom - using two legs! Yay! I brought her a hot dog and popcorn - just as well, because her hospital supper didn't look good. It called itself "Chinese stir-fry" but it looked more like beef stew, and not a good beef stew at that.

At one point a nurse asked, "Is this the room with the party?" [livejournal.com profile] maaseru shares the room with a woman who was feverish, sick, and feeling awful, and a very perky woman of ninety-five, whose nieces visited and were fun. There was much admiration of [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi's quilt squares, which she was working on, and quite right, too.

We managed to go online1 and I discovered that they are making a Solomon Kane movie. How had I missed that?

And - I think I gasped aloud - Kane is played by James Purfoy. I done died an' gone to heaven.

Solomon Kane is my favourite of the Robert E. Howard heroes.2 Remember when there were Solomon Kane stories in Marvel Premiere with art by John Buscema? I thought Kane was sexy, because he was so dark and repressed - sexy in the way 17th century Jesuits were, or certain English Puritans. I wonder if I'll feel the same about him in the movie.

Here's a nice pic I found of him by Mike Grell. Here is a drawing of Kane in an uncharacteristically heroic pose. Here's a fair-haired, bearded Kane. And - ooh - this, from the movie. Gorgeous!

Found an item about the movie by its writer/producer, Michael Bassett. It's hard to judge the quality from his comments - but the notion that it's 'character driven' is good. There seem to be no trailers yet, though. I wonder why not.

And I never knew this, The Solomon Kane Sketchbook, existed. Seems to be out of print. Damn.

1 By "we" I mean [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, who is a miracle-worker. There is no Internet access in the hospital. But she managed to get [livejournal.com profile] maaseru connected, with all the aplomb and canniness of a true U.N.C.L.E. agent. Awesome.

2 Unless you count Red Sonja as drawn by Barry Windor-Smith.

Cool! Yes indeed, I remember those Marvel Premieres. Dark and repressed really does it for me. I hope they do a good job with the movie.

Me too. He had just the right balance. When I excitedly told [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi yesterday they were making a Solomon Kane movie, she said, "Who?"

"Robert E. Howard's other hero," I said. "The one who isn't Conan."

"Kull?" said [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, perplexed.

"His other other hero," I said.

I guess Solomon Kane is a little more obscure.

I hope they do a good job with the movie.

Yes. My only fear is because the 'look' reminds me a little of Van Helsing, which had looked promising. And it sounds as if they rewrote/embellished the character a little - that could be good or bad. We'll know when we see it!

Yes, I think so.....! Boy, this takes me back.

Van Helsing definitely "looked" promising. Parts of it were actually OK to watch. Mostly sizzle, no steak.

This could be very interesting - I hope they do a good job with it.

Sadly disappointing. It did have its moments, particulary visually. And what a good cast! But lacking in tension and substance.

Not that Robert E. Howard is usually very substantial. But he should have something - a sense of drama, danger both physical and psychological, intensity of situation.

I live in hope.

And after all: James Purefoy.

It was one of those movies which make pretty wallpaper.

LOL, no. But like you, I live in hope.

So true. Even David Wenham looked good, despite his odd role. High Jackman and Kate Beckinsale always look great, but I wish they'd choose their movies more carefully.

I had high hopes for that movie - it *looked* wonderful in the previews. Ah well. The visuals were wonderful. A pity the story didn't match.

Didn't we all! At first, [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi and I thought it was a parody. A very funny comedy. Then we realized that it wasn't that way on purpose. After a while we stopped laughing.

That is so true. Even in the relative resourcelessness of a hospital room, she can do wonders.

Please send our best wishes for maaseru's speedy recovery.

Will do!

Oh, wow, go away for awhile (from LJ) and find all sorts of things have happened! Please send my best wishes to [livejournal.com profile] masseru. I know you and all her friends will take good care of her!

And a belated happy new year to you! *g*

Yup. Blink and it all changes!

I will relay your good wishes to [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, who I know will feel better for it. We're doing our best to take care of her, but it's an uphill job. [g]

Happy new year to you, too.

Can you tell M that I am away now until late Wednesday lecturing. I should have email but can't promise. Hope she is feeling OK ( as opposed to feeling fiiiiiiiiiiiine on drugs).

When is she coming home, do you know?

C

We're all happy to hear you're lecturing. Congratulations!

She is feelings fine. Really, the change is amazing. She's not in pain, she's moving around, she's even walking to the bathroom (with her walker) without assistance. We are impressed.

She isn't even hooked up to tubes and wires any more. She and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi are watching the Golden Globe Awards (which is a bunch of American celebrities I mostly never heard of.)

[livejournal.com profile] maaseru thinks she'll be going home tomorrow but nothing's official yet. The doctor said 'probably Monday'.

I once saw a production of Measure for Measure in which Angelo was done up in priest's garb that was vaguely Jesuitical. It made a strong impression. I forget who was playing Angelo, but he was rather gorgeous.
