Popcorn with butter and salt
Potato chips with onion cream cheese dip
Ginger cookies (the Swedish kind Ikea sells)
Raspberries
Hot chocolate

... Oh, wait. The question said one food.

Oops.

But I think mine is macaroni and cheese - my very favorite comfort food

That's one of my favourite foods. I'm not sure I ever use it as a comfort food - but it works!

Definitely agreed w.r.to popcorn.

Up till a year ago, it used to (in winter) be chowders such as clam chowder (Boston/NE style). Then I discovered I had allergy problems to *anything* creamed. I was not a happy camper on discovering that ... and have still not adjusted to all the consequences [no pizza, for another]. :-(

I've had a lot of food allergies, which come and go. It's a nuisance!

That's not a fair question; it can't be just ONE. Plus they forgot to add mashed potatoes; years ago I got laid off of my job. I had tendinitis, was over my head with debt and had a lot of trouble sleeping. This was a problem way beyond writer's block. I would walk up around 2 AM, trembling with anxiety. The only thing that would calm me down was a huge bowl of mashed potatoes. I gained a ton of weight that year and still haven't taken all of it off but mashed potatoes were better than Valium.

No. Sometimes it depends on season. Or on mood. Or on circumstances.

Woo! What a brilliant cure - I must try it.

mashed potatoes were better than Valium.

Probably better for you, too. Despite the weight gain.

Did you keep mashed potatoes in the fridge in case of emergencies? Or did you cook it from scratch in the middle of the night?

I had the peeled cooked potatoes ready. I'd smash them up with hot milk, butter, cheese - whatever seasonings I wanted. It's still my favorite comfort food although I don't resort to it very much these days. Thank heavens, the days of extreme anxiety are over (I hope).
