From January 1, 2009: So … any Reading Resolutions? Say, specific books you plan to read? A plan to read more ____? Anything at all? Name at least ONE thing you’re looking forward to reading this year!
My Reading Resolutions for 2009
  1. Read more history.
  2. Don't get more books out of the library than I can read (or carry). Get them out and read them. Return them. Repeat. A maximum of... say... six books at a time.
  3. Return the books I've borrowed from friends.
  4. Read unread books in my bookshelves.
  5. Read Paladin of Souls, Freedom and Necessity and The Odyssey.
  6. I'm looking forward to reading the third of the current set of Torchwood novels, Skypoint by Phil Ford, the biography of Alice Sheldon by Julie Phillips, and History Play by Rodney Bolt.

One of mine would be. catch up on the torchwood novels.

I have read the Odyssey as I read it for a subject I did in high school called Classical studies. One of the topics within it was about epic stories.

Good one!

I never studies the Greek classics in school, just the myths. I read The Iliad (Fagles translation) a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, so I think it's time to read The Odyssey. Have to buy myself a copy, though.

I learnt the myths as well.

Also got to read two plays, including Oedipus Rex.

At some point in my academic career, I studied Aeschylus' The Persians, and loved it. And I read Herodotus for a seminar course; loved it, too. But almost all my reading about ancient Greece has been history rather than literature.

Which, when you think about it, has been typical of my life.

I ought to resolve to buy no more books till I read all the ones I already own.

I'm never going to try that. I'd just get discouraged and depressed; what's the fun of having a whole library when you've already read it all? Ideally, I'd have maybe 25%, or 30%, unread books. As it is... it's more like 60%, I think. And I don't throw out unread books because one has to know the book already to judge whether to keep it. So if I catch up even just a little, I'll be ahead of the game.

So I'm hoping to improve the balance, but I'm not aiming for totality.

I'm falling behind on my nonfiction, so my resolution is to read at least one nonfic book a month.

Do you have any particular nonfiction in mind? I was thinking that I have a number of biographies in my shelves that I haven't read (or haven't finished), and I'd really like to read them all.

Most of it is Tudor-era history, left over from an abandoned study project a few years ago.

Now, Tudor history is fascinating - and I'd think that even if I wasn't a Dunnett fan.

Excellent list! I'd like to read them all myself. And might, given time.
