The Slave and the Master

The Master caressed Jack's face. "How does he enslave you so?"

"By setting me free," said Jack. He did not avoid the Master's touch. He was used to it now, a daily ordeal.

"He will never love you."

"It doesn't matter."

"Despite his cruelty?"

"Despite anything."

"Love me, and I will set you free."

"No."

"Love me, and I will set him free."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because he would hate it."

"I will kill you again."

"You will anyway."

"He loves me more than he will ever love you."

"I know," said Jack, and smiled.

The Master killed him again.

Whoah. Dark and fine. I liked this.

"I know, said Jack..."

Oh, Jack! But very true to how I see his character, and his feelings for the Doc. Perfectly put!

Thank you so much for the kind words. I think we see Jack the same way.

I think you're right! :D (Love your icon, BTW, while we're on the subject . . .)

Chilling

Just the way the Master intended it. Too bad it didn't work on Jack the way he'd wanted it to. And it wouldn't have. You understand Jack so much better than many writers out there. You should be proud.

You say the nicest things. Thank you.

The thing is... as you've noticed, I love Jack, and I think I understand Jack, and have no trouble understanding Jack. He makes such perfect sense to me as a person, with clear motivation and problems and reactions. And sometimes I read fanfic about him and wonder what the writer is thinking, or who they think they're writing about.

It can be hard to figure out why other people sometimes just don't get it.

Now if only the episode had been given the depth and feeling of this... Lovely!

Thank you for the lovely comment. I'd certainly have liked to have seen more of Jack and his inner views on "The Last of the Time Lords", but at least we had him there, being heroic - and I'm enjoying the long-term consideration of what that story did to him, and what it made of him.
