1917

Passchendaele. In the trenches, death surrounded them. The young, the beautiful, the brave - death took them wantonly. To Jack's eyes, all the soldiers were young, beautiful, and brave.

"Why're you here?" asked Michael Dunne, while they shared a cigarette.

"Duty," said Jack, which was a nice shorthand for the truth: I'm killing time while waiting for someone, and atoning a wrong I will do your planet twenty-four years from now. "You?"

"The old story," said Mike carelessly. "A woman. I'm protecting her brother."

Jack had wanted to protect Grey, his own brother. He had failed.

"Good luck," he said.

I agree that 'good writing' is the important thing. "Toned down" can mean a lot of things... I do hope we still get some sex, not to mention hugging and kissing between men. Or women. Ah well... we shall see.
