From December 18, 2008: Do you give books as gifts?
Yes, of course. Frequently and often. I have some friends who would be disappointed if I didn't give them a book at Christmas.
To everyone? Or only to select people?
To friends. Most of my friends are readers. I have one friend who is too sick to read - he'll be getting music or a DVD, or maybe an audiobook. I might give other things to some people, but there isn't much that is better than books. I am including comic books in the category of "books" here.
How do you feel about receiving books as gifts?
They're just about perfect.

Of course, not all books are created equal, and no one can fully predict someone else's taste. But most of my friends are really, really good at guessing what I'd like.

And don't you just love Amazon wish lists? For both giving and receiving?

Christmas Day with Cion's folks:

1. Wait til you can smell the coffee. (Thanks, Mom!)
2. Shuffle out of bed.
3. Open all the books!
4. Spend the rest of the day reading.

It's a sacrament.

Isn't it though? A nice walk in the woods and pastures in the afternoon, a few glasses of wine, Mr. Turkey for dinner, snoozing dogs, and books all in between.

...and James Marsters under the tree? :-) I'm hoping for Gareth under mine, except he's probably not much good at relaxing and hanging around, so I'll have to open him last: maybe when it's time for our walk. (Hm. Must remember to bring extra pair of snowshoes for him.)

Ooo, nice thought!

I'll have to open him last: maybe when it's time for our walk.

I'm sure he will make it very lively.

I'm thinking of buying snowshoes this year, even just to walk to work.

Snowshoeing is lovely. Snowshoeing in quiet winter woods is like living inside a prayer.

I would like that. Yes, I think I definitely want snowshoes.

Yes you do.

The thing about winter woods that makes it so much more loveable than any other time of year is that you can see all the little animal life. Little mouse tracks, mink slides, squirrel tunnels, rabbit tracks... all laid out before you in the snow.

We get interesting tracks here in the park by the Rideau Canal. Though there's been too much steady snowfall this year so far for many tracks to be visible anywhere - !

I don't know if I can get out of the city into woods on snowshoes, as I don't drive and so would have trouble. But it's a nice thought.

There are plenty of places to snowshoe in the city - in and around the Canal, the rivers, the parts, the Experimental Farm.

Good grief. My husband and daughters would throw enormous tantrums if there weren't books in some of the Christmas parcels. As would I. I still remember the terrible bleakness of one Christmas when I was about eleven or twelve when I had not a single book, and the long days rolled ahead with only TV to fill them. Books are as essential for Christmas as the food.

I don't approve of tantrums, generally speaking, but - they would be justified. Christmas ought to be full of books. It just... ought to be. It would be so wrong if it wasn't.

Oh no! How awful!

I don't think I've ever had a bookless Christmas, I'm happy to say. Not yet. That would be bleak indeed.
