True; the writings of Joss Whedon and LMB have certain good qualities in common. Humour, humanism, social and scientific speculation, clever characters who survive by their wits - no wonder I love both.
Ooh, I'm really excited about Dollhouse - it looks pretty interesting from what I've seen of the trailer. The last I heard is that it's starting sometime in January... *waits impatiently*
Agreed on that. But I also keenly miss Babylon 5, and not just because it was cancelled... no, I missed it keenly after Sinclair left and it began to turn into just another imitation of Tolkien. Sigh. It could have been...! Ah, well.
Yes. My memories of Babylon 5 are not particularly fond, but season one really was excellent for a lot of reasons: particularly the characters, particularly Sinclair. Tasia was saying (at her B5 video-party) that JMS had planned all along to have Sinclair leave after the first season and then follow the story-line as it transpired, but that wasn't what I heard at the time.
That's interesting... it seemed like an abrupt mid-stride shift, to me, at the time. Especially, the evolving relationship between Garibaldi and Sinclair got totally dropped, and that was part of the backbone of the show.
I am afraid that I now think of that show as one of the great examples in modern video SciFi of anti-diversity bigotry. Just for one, think of how the gay character once again turned into the hidden villain. For another, it still makes me cringe to think of how Delenn was changed from an amazing character, fully realized in her alienness, into a fake human trying to learn how to do things that "normal" human children learn before they are legally adults -- feh!! I found it humiliating. Not to mention the entrenched monogamous heterosexuality (except for Ivanova, were there any non-het, non-monogamous-type relationships at all?). So, as time passes and the glamour of my first affection for the show, borne of its first glorious season, fades... rationality takes over, and I am sad and sorry to realize just how cliched it did turn out to be. Sadness. Ai, alas.
You never did respond to me gushing about B5 with other than hesitant polite diffidence; I think you've been clear-eyed about the show right from the start! On the other hand, I was clearly just seeing it as I wished it actually was, and disregarding all the flaws. Pretty good for self-brainwashing, eh? Hm.

Who was that? I don't remember any gay characters. (Except Talia/Ivanova.)

I hated that so very much. And she became so silly. I'm not sure if it was anti-feminist or just idiotic.

I was never as enamored of it as most of my friends, though I enjoyed the advance publicity at SDCC and I did love Sinclair and Garibaldi. But there was so very much I didn't like about it that I was really never a fan - I'm not sure I ever much liked any of the characters except Sinclair, Garibaldi, and Delenn, and I didn't like what happened to any of them. Okay, I also had a huge crush on Lyta, but she disappointed me to by coming to nothing in terms of storyline. It also seemed very militaristic to me. And the things my friends seemed to like about it, I didn't like a t all. For example, I never liked the humour in the show.

Date: 2008-12-04 07:08 pm (UTC)Yes, I wanted more story.... more of the lovely Firefly ambience of character, action, and humour. Damn, it was good.
I wonder what Dollhouse will be like.

But there were some good episodes.

You remind me that I haven't seen an episode, or written about one, in weeks. I've just been so busy... and I miss it.
