An odd day: I burbled about some of my problems on one of my mailing lists, something I don't usually do. Don't usually want to do. Can't tell whether it made me feel better or not.

Made French toast for supper for myself and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. Explored French websites, radio stations and sites where they tutor you in French - found some good ones. Should have been doing weights and/or yoga, but went for a walk instead. Should have been cleaning up, as they'll be doing work on the floor of my apartment tomorrow, but I found it difficult to settle to anything, least of all studying French, and ended up playing Scrabulous and chatting online with Lil (who is currently in California).

One useful thing I did - I phoned the Rogers cable people and switched my expensive movie channel that I never watch for a less expensive set of French TV channels, including ZTélé, the station that shows Torchwood and Doctor Who in French. Not to mention Porte des Etoiles and Alias. To bad they're not showing Buffy, La Tueureuse des Vampires.

Oooh, i was thinking of doing French evening classes to brush up on my (20year old) language skills. Never thought of doing it online instead.

Thank you!

I'm feeling much better today - less tense about things.

I'd take classes if I could, but I haven't found any that are about to start. (Or that I can afford.) Things tend to start in September. Which gives me a month to work on my own, anyway.

Oddly enough :-)

Looks interesting. I wonder what it will be like? I've seen some Arthurian things that were decidedly... subpar. But this looks kind of interesting, I'd say. Hope spring eternal.

Good for you for all the things you did do -- including taking a walk instead of doing weights or yoga. It all has purpose!

And good for you for changing the television station selection -- much more to the point, now. Reminding me of similar "excising" exercises I've faced myself, some as recently as this week... which always do make me feel better once I've admitted that I truly don't need the thing I subscribed to, or picked up but never used, and move on to that which is much more fitting (in all ways, including financial).

Does Rogers have a Latin station? They should be playing Buffus the Bacchae Slayer, I'd think. Go check.

I've yet to find a Latin TV station, but there are a few Latin radio programmes. I'd like to find an Esperanto station, too. Luckily, French TV stations in these parts are plentiful.

So, start with French. Maybe someone on YouTube or something has ideas for doing a Latin or Esperanto video forum or whatever.

Are the Latin radio programs "church Latin" or the classical-pronunciation Latin that I learned in school, I wonder? As I learned it, the vowels have single, simple sounds (one for long vowel, one for short vowel), and the pronunciation is clean and exact. I enjoyed that part of it. It was entertainment for me, to pronounce Latin properly. Huh. That sounds odd, written down. I was just being honest!

I have an Esperanto movie, starring William Shatner. That's enough to start with. I don't have time to watch more.

There are different Latin radio programs and I imagine they use different types of Latin depending on their location and purpose. As far as I know, none originate in North America, so they probably don't use North American-style Latin.

My high school Latin teacher told us about when her son (who then was out of college and in a profession) spending a college break in another country... possibly Africa somewhere? And the family he stayed with knew English only if he spoke very slowly, but the son of the family had studied Latin, and so the two of them could converse in Latin quite easily. Like that story.

Like William Shatner speaking Esperanto, too. Neat idea.

I'm not sure that Shatner ever actually spoke Esperanto - well enough for the movie, I guess. But he wasn't a proponent of the language as far as I know. I don't know how he came to make it. I think of it as a gem in my collection.
