I just did something amazing. You've noticed, I suspect, because I've mentioned it a few times, that after my ankle was broken I became phobic about even going into the kitchen, a place guaranteed to put me into an excruciating state of pain however briefly I was in there. So: I stayed out as much as possible. I made my friends brave the wilds when they were over, and I occasionally used the dishwasher - though it has broken down now, so that's a moot point. Other stratagem: take-out food and eating in restaurants.1

But things are changing. I'll be soon getting a new fridge and a new floor, both sorely needed. And the bottom of the lower cupboards has broken, and everything in the cupboard tumbled about inside. I had no good idea what was in there. So - today - I tackled it all, pitched what I didn't need (or put it aside for give-away) and cleaned out the entire cupboard.

Then I cooked my supper - real food, using a pot and everything. Then I washed dishes by hand.

I intended to dry them too, but The Foot would hear none of it, so before I fell over, I've come into the living room to rest it for a bit. Write this. Watch the Sound of Music because (a) I love it and (b) I'm going to see How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria tomorrow. Captain Von Trapp is singing "Eidelweiss" right now.

There's a lot more to do in the kitchen but with any luck The Foot will be in even better shape next week. I think this job was preying on my mind; it feels so much better to have it done.

And for almost three months now I've been fantasizing about new starts and doing things the way I want to. Now it feels as if I'm doing it. It feels... just great.

1 My general policy: when poverty hits worst, is to spend money.

I'm very glad for you that you've been able to wash dishes.

*hugs*

That's wonderful.

OUCH!

Physical pain, financial pain...all manner of pain there.

*winces all the way from Vancouver today...*

Is it as rainy today in Vancouver as it is here?

Likely!

You wonder what's wrong with the world when I'm excited when I can wash dishes. By hand. Really, it isn't my favourite activity!

But yes... it's wonderful!

*happy hugs*

Nope.

Evidence en route ASAP for your perusal from Horseshoe Bay. I've got a little time before the ferry takes me back to Nanaimo.

It's *always* nice to tackle something that's been long-postponed. Congrats and many ((hugs)) while I am at it.

As for spending money when one is at one's poorest -- that too is all too familiar. As a well-known saying goes: "Money talks ... the only thing mine knows to say is 'goodbye'." :-/

Hoping I've gotten toys as useful as they are entertaining with mine, then.

Yes. I've been sitting there on my sofa for three months thinking about doing this sort of thing. Now I've started doing it. Feels good.

Well, feels good except for the twinges of pain from The Foot who thinks it worked too hard. Hah! Too bad.

As a well-known saying goes: "Money talks ... the only thing mine knows to say is 'goodbye'."

That sums it up rather well.

Oh, you are so amazing. "Good for you" is so weak -- what I want to do is hug you! Look at what you've done, whoa! New beginnings. Good things. Happy.

Glad to hear about your new fridge. And floor? Hm, sounds complicated! Hope that goes very well.

I had to grin at your cupboard descriptions. Goodness me, now exactly what did you end up finding in there when you did open them up? hee! Hope the reacher-grabber came in handy (I have no doubt it did!). If you have any cake pans, can I have them? Or maybe not. You give yours to the thrift shops in Ottawa, and I'll buy mine at the thrift shop here -- it all comes to a balance eventually, I would say [g].

Captain Von Trapp singing "Eidelweiss"... that's such a sad scene. When I was little, I didn't understand it at all. Now, I can hardly watch it without tears. The Sound of Music was the very first movie I ever saw. Just about perfect for a first movie, I'd say! And it was just by chance.

As for Toronto and John Barrowman... enjoy it enormously. I will stand by for the report!

And... you are amazing! Your kitchen is no longer terrible and scary: you are once again at ease in it. Yes!

Glad to hear about your new fridge.

Me too. And I'll be even happier about it when it comes.

now exactly what did you end up finding in there when you did open them up?

Pots and pans and packages. Nothing really old or surprising. It wasn't that bad, just everything tumbled together because the floor is at 45 degrees and I hadn't cleaned it up in months.

If you have any cake pans, can I have them?

If I had any, you could, but I don't have any.

Edelweiss

A sad and difficult time for an Austrian. I am always sort of tearful over Captain Von Trapp's heroism - tearing down the Nazi flag from his house, for example.

The Sound of Music was the very first movie I ever saw. Just about perfect for a first movie, I'd say!

My first was "Peter Pan". The first after that that I really recall was "the Music Man". Loved it so much.

Now I really can do the Happy Dance. Not that I've done it yet. But - any minute now!
