fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Companion)

So I was looking at The 2008 SyFy Portal Genre Awards. I love this sort of thing. I voted, and here are the nomations and my votes:

Welcome to the Genre Awards. You may vote once per day per email address. Eh? Why would I do that?

BEST ACTOR/Television
Jensen Ackles, Supernatural
John Barrowman, Torchwood
Edward James Olmos, Battlestar Galactica
Lee Pace, Pushing Daisies
David Tennant, Doctor Who

- I don't like Jensen Ackles, and haven't seen Lee Pace. I do love Edward James Olmos and against any other kind of competition I'd vote for him. But Barrowman and Tennant? My guys. The problem is, which one? I chose Barrowman only because I can't vote for both.

BEST ACTRESS/Television
Freema Agyeman, Doctor Who
Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies
Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica
Eve Myles, Torchwood
Sophia Myles, Moonlight

- Freema Agyeman. No hesitation, no question. Even though I've had a crush on Anna Friel for eons, I've never seen Pushing Daisies and how could even she do better than the wonderful, wonderful Freema as Martha Jones?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/Television
James Callis, Battlestar Galactica
Aaron Douglas, Battlestar Galactica
Michael Emerson, Lost
Burn Gorman, Torchwood
Michael Hogan, Battlestar Galactica

- Tough, because all the actors in Battlestar Galactica are very good, even if I don't like Aaron Douglas. But I don't like Burn Gorman either, though he's a terrific actor. I no longer watch Lost.... so, a toss-up between Hogan and Callis. I chose Callis. Both are excellent, but Callis meets greater acting challenges.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Television
Claudia Black, Stargate SG-1
Summer Glau, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Tricia Helfer, Battlestar Galactica
Allison Mack, Smallville
Katee Sackhoff, Battlestar Galactica

- Oh my goodness. With the exception of Summer Glau, who I thought was okay as River and dull as Cameron, I love all those actresses. But I haven't actually seen Alison Mack for several seasons of Smallville, much as I love her, and Claudia Black's role in Stargate was - well, less said the better. So my choice is Katee Sackhoff, who, even though Starbuck's role in the show has been less than stellar this year, is still brilliant and wonderful and interesting and strong and sexy.

BEST EPISODE/Television
Blink, Doctor Who
Exit Wounds, Torchwood
Faith, Battlestar Galactica
The Great Leap Forward, The 4400
He That Believeth In Me, Battlestar Galactica

- I haven't seen The 4400. The Battlestar Galactica episodes listed were great, but Battlestar Galactica in general suffers from certain writing/conceptual problems. I loved "Exit Wounds", though I loved "Fragments" more, and that still wasn't my favourite of Torchwood series 2. "Exit Wounds", for all its strengths, suffered from problems of structure and tone.

So. The winner - by a mile - is "Blink": beautifully written, structured, paced, acted, great special effects - TV doesn't get better than "Blink".

BEST GUEST STAR/Television
Michelle Forbes, Battlestar Galactica, Razor
Derek Jacobi, Doctor Who, Utopia
James Marsters, Torchwood, Exit Wounds
John Simm, Doctor Who, Sound of Drums
George Takei, Heroes, Four Month Ago

- Whimper. I have to choose between Michelle Forbes and James Marsters? two of my favourites ever? Aaargh!

Flip a coin.

I chose Marsters.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR
Conchita Campbell, The 4400
Noah Gray-Cabey, Heroes
Jordan Hinson, Eureka
Maria Lark, Medium
Hayden Panettiere, Heroes

- Noah Gray-Cabey, who just stuns me.

BEST ACTOR/Movie
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man
Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Will Smith, I Am Legend

- I chose Robert Downey Jr., whom I thought was fantastic, fantastic, fantastic as Tony Stark. I always love Johnny Depp but haven't seen Sweeny Todd and don't plan to; used to like Harrison Ford but don't even want to see his new movie. Never liked Will Smith at all. Daniel Radcliffe, though a fine actor, doesn't do much for me.

BEST ACTRESS/Movie
Helena Bonham Carter, Sweeney Todd
Claire Danes, Stardust
Nicole Kidman, The Golden Compass
Gwyneth Paltrow, Iron Man
Emma Watson, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

- Lacking strong feelings on this one, I chose Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.

BEST WEB SITE
GateWorld
SciFi.com/SciFi Wire
SupernaturalTV.com
TorchwoodTV.Blogspot.com
Whedonesque

- I chose TorchwoodTV.Blogspot.com, the only one of the above I go to on a regular basis.

BEST WEB PRODUCTION
Illiad, Star Trek: Odyssey
Returned, The House Between
Star Trek: Of Gods and Men
Webisode VIII, Sanctuary
World Enough and Time, Star Trek: New Voyages

- I don't look at web productions, so I skipped this category.

BEST MOVIE
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I Am Legend
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man
Stardust

- Easy call: Iron Man.

BEST SERIES/Television
Doctor Who
Battlestar Galactica
Jericho
Lost
Supernatural

- Doctor Who. Best written show on TV by a long shot. Battlestar Galactica used to be almost as good, but I have problems with it this season.

GENE RODDENBERRY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Douglas Adams
Arthur C. Clarke
Gene L. Coon
J.K. Rowling
H.G. Wells

- Douglas Adams.
