I think at this point they are both just confused and don't really know what to do about the whole thing.
Despite my initial reaction to their scene, this rings true. They know it's hopeless. They can't stay away from each other. In frustration and need, they lash out at each other, knowing that no one but each other will understand - but that they will understand. And they do.
Every British fan I know goes "Go Giles!" at that bit.
I did, too, and I'm not even British! (But I do like British sports and I don't like American football at all. So I share his bias.)
