She is a wonderful character and although the things she does are not so nice, she just works, both as a character in her own right and as the link to how Angel could do the terrible things he did before the gypsy curse.
I like it that she presents the vampire point of view. The Master doesn't - he doesn't have enough character for that, he's a sort of symbol/figurehead. But Darla, because she can look and act so human, gives us the vampire's-eye-view of things. Buffy is human, Angel is sort of a half-human/half-vampire compromise. Darla is pure vampire.
Cordelia and Xander were never my favourite characters on Buffy although other fans adore them.
So far I'm pretty neutral on them. They aren't annoying (usually), they have some good lines and their place in the plot, but they could disappear forever and I wouldn't necessarily miss them.
