This struck me as particularly bitchy, materialistic and prime Cordelia characterization. I hope she eventually develops into less of a one-note role.

I don't really like the way the plot (or the line) plays on her ignorance.
It isn't, but it's early days yet, and the whole of Sunnydale is afflcted with a kind of wilful blindness at times. Necessary for storytelling purposes, but not always believable, unless you see it as a metaphor for adults not understanding teenagers concerns.
Glad you liked this episode as it's definitely one of the best in Season 1 and unbelievably important in terms of story arc.
It's so enjoyable watching you meet these characters for the first time. I feel an annoying urge coming on to sit here cackling "wait and see" *g*.
