Plushies help. I have a visiting crocodile who is useful for the purpose.
If something really scares me, I just stop watching.
There are a small, small number of TV shows that find the right balance of scary and entertaining for me. X-Files used to be able to do it. Now Doctor Who and Torchwood both can.
