I learned today that Torchwood series 1 was going to be starting all over again on another Canadian channel. In French.

This filled me with the irresistible urge to watch the series in French.

It took some research, but I tracked the station down and found it in my cable listings, with Torchwood listed to begin on Monday. Then discovered that I don't actually get that station. But I also noticed, in searching for Torchwood, that the very same channel is airing Doctor Who. I don't know what season they're showing, or even what Doctor, but does it matter? I'm there!

So I phoned up Rogers Cable, and lo and behold, I now get several French stations including the one I really want, #683. But I get something called "Historia" as well - that sounds promising. Dare I hope that the French are making all sorts of historical documentaries about the middle ages, and it won't all be 20th century wars?

Monday they show "Tout Change". "Everything Changes".

French with a Welsh accent? I doubt it. When I watched Smallville in French, Lex Luthor sounded as if he came from downtown Montreal. This will probably be dubbed in France, and they'll all sound continental-European. Les aventures de Capitaine Jacques Harknesse.

I can hardly wait.

At least this will tide me over for the week before series 2 starts. Less than two weeks, and already the wait seems interminable.

You are so intensely besotted and fannish. Wow. I hope Dr. Who and Captain Jack know how lucky they are to have your devotion ; )

I somehow don't think they'd particularly care about my devotion... But it's a nice thought! And yes, I am very besotted, very fannish. I revel in it shamelessly.

Watching Torchwood in French tips the fannishness over into my love of languages - making it a different sort of thrill. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi said she wouldn't like it because Captain Jack's beautiful voice wouldn't be the same - but he'll look just as good. And though I hope they get a good voice actor to do his voice, that isn't paramount for me, not when it's not in English.

Ah, a two-for-one kind of thing.

Personally, I have zero interest in watching the Naruto dub - but then the language interest button is pushed by watching the original anyway. The voice actor for Naruto is *awesome*, and I don't want any dub to ruin it for me! And I watched about five seconds of a clip with a secondary character, and his voice ... *shudders* there's a reason why I only watched five seconds. Not satisfactory at all!

Hi, random person alert! Found you through [livejournal.com profile] carlisle_coop's flist, as I use it to pick up most of my DW fics, heh.

But anyway! Just wondering, but what's the channel's name? Since I'm from BC and am really hoping that Shaw will have this. Because Torchwood in French will probably be the best thing ever.

Also, thank you for little random things on Ottawa, since I just moved from there and am missing it a bunch. I am freakishly jealous of your snow.

Happy to see you here! I had lunch yesterday with a friend from BC - actually, someone who was orginally from Ottawa (like you) but has lived on Vancouver Island for the last decade. We were taking about BC in the restaurant and a woman from another table came over to say she heard us talking about BC and wanted to say 'hi' because she noticed what we were saying. She as from near Prince George, I think.

As for the French Torchwood - the network is ztele, or ztélé if the accents come out right on LJ, the channel is listed as - hold on while I check my television - CANLZ. I think Torchwood in French will be unutterably cool.

I am freakishly jealous of your snow.

You pervy snow-lover, you! I'd send you some if I could. We have lots and lots. And it snowed again yesterday. Is it snowing now? I haven't opened my curtains yet, but I wouldn't bet against it. [Checks.] No, but it looks as if it will start again soon.

A passion for languages is part of the thrill. I've been telling myself I should practice my French more, too. If I could atch Torchwood or Doctor Who in French, Italian, Latin, or Esperanto, I would. I wish!

If they had subtitled versions of French Torchwood, I'd watch that, too. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi would agree with you regarding the anime and the voice acting.

Personally I think the best option is to have the choice of subtitles or dubbing, so one can watch either, or watch it one way and then the other. I like subtitles fine, but even when I'm just watching, it sometimes bothers me to have to read the text rather than just look at the picture, particularly if it's anime with particularly good art. My eyes are darting around all the time. Moreover, since I want to watch TV while doing my exercises, subtitles just don't work - I miss getting the flow of the story because I can't keep my eyes on the screen all the time. It just can't be done with yoga. I've tried.

However, bad voice-acting is execrable and this is why I find a lot of American (and a fair amount of Japanese) animation unwatchable: I so often hate the voices, which seem to be pitched a little higher than regular live-action TV/movie voices. The intonation is different. Difficult to listen to. This is particularly noticeable in French. I'm hoping I won't have this problem with Torchwood, but I don't think I will - it isn't usually a problem with live-action show. You just have to get used to the lip-action being wrong.

We'll see what it's like.

Bwa! Vancouver Island's nice, but has to many bumps to me. Much like Ottawa better~ Even with the fog.

Ah, thank you! I'll be sure to check what Shaw has to offer. And I think the best thing to hear would be Jack's voice, heh. Lets see if the French can pull off a proper Barrowman!

What can I say, I've always wanted to build snow-Daleks! ;D

Snow Daleks! What a great idea!

Plenty of Ottawa fog today. Nice for walking, though. I've always liked walking in fog.
