If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 1900 - 1944

Ohhh yes! Yes. Make somebody WANT to do something, and he'll find a way. (And when he doesn't... he'll find excuses...)

Thing is, it isn't so easy. Maybe for some people - the silver-tongued among us. Usually, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

... whoever said life is easy? *ducks and hides her young head*

But seriously, it may be hard, but I do think it would be easier than dealing with, well, low-quality work due to lack of wish to get it RIGHT.

Hee. Right.

And of course, if it's worth doing, it's worth loving, and vice versa, right?

^_^

Yup... and, more Cordelia/Milesian, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. (I think. I think Miles does say something to that effect... somewhere. lol)

But I do believe it's all in wanting to do what you're doing. In the end.

Yes, though Miles' own definition of 'right' may be a little bit... elastic.

I do believe it's all in wanting to do what you're doing. In the end.

Sigh. Yes. I wish I were doing more of that.

Well not in this context, I think... As Illyan says, Miles delivers Results beyond the wildest expectations ;)

I wish I were doing more of that.

SO! I wish you get to do more of that in the new year!

Yes, but it would be *awfully* nice if they'd actually do the basic stuff they promised to do. Believing in the dream isn't enough if you don' follow through.

I'm currently feeling very dyspeptic about some people you don't know...

While I'm feeling dyspeptic about some people you do know - ! Ah well, that's life for you.

Yes, one should follow caring with action, or it doesn't make a lot of difference.

So build one! Not long ago I read the text of how St. Brendan's monks built their little boat that they then used to sail form Ireland to the New World. (Or so it seems.) Much superheroic action, but I loved the idea of making this tiny seaworthy vessel and then just... sailing.

So this passage made me think of Brendan.

I'm not sure whether I'd want to build it myself, but I love the principle. Other people want to fly - I want to sail.

I'm not very uppy.

That doesn't sound good... but maybe not being uppy is better than being uppity?

I'm suffering from insomnia, as I rarely do. Troubles with a friend who is mad at me were bothering me... That's rare, too. And then I couldn't even find any good porn to read in my fandoms.

My recent troubles, with friends and otherwise, I have been drowning in the Mighty Boosh and its branches. It's near two weeks now, and it's affected my conduct, ways of thinking, and possibly speech patterns.

So what is Mighty Boosh?

Date: 2008-01-04 09:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sparklebutch.livejournal.com
A show so strange - some would say silly - that is defies explanation. When its creators are asked to explain it in interviews, they tend to reply things like, "uh, it's... a documentary... about penguins".

It isn't.

It is a show about Howard Moon and Vince Noir (http://www.doctorvee.co.uk/images/boosh5.jpg), and their adventures. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/content/images/2007/05/16/lakeshine_396x222.jpg) With songs.

Its third series is on youtube under the secret identity name "The Maightee Bewsh" [production company's a bitch], and the Live Show DVD is also on youtube almost in its entirety. Although since it's relying on the show quite a lot, I wonder what it would look like to a newcomer. I believe the answer to that is, "strange".

Yes, I've seen screencaps - and it looked strange. Mighty strange.

Date: 2008-01-04 10:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sparklebutch.livejournal.com
Ah, but is it your cup of strange tea, or not?

Date: 2008-01-04 10:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
That's the question. Of course, 'strange' is always in the eye of the beholder. I don't think anything I like is 'strange' but other people seem to think so.

Date: 2008-01-04 10:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sparklebutch.livejournal.com
There's rabbits and unicorns and a man with a polo for an eye.

I think you can admit to strangeness when you talk about a show you like and you say things like "I love the bit where he's so ice princess dancing with the Yeti".

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
A polo? You mean, like a peppermint candy?

I like ice princesses. Just on principle.

From: [identity profile] sparklebutch.livejournal.com
Yes, the candy.

I like ice princesses too! Even more when they're Vince.

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Vince is the guy in the show?

I'm having brunch with a guy named Vince tomorrow. I don't think he's an ice princess, but it's possible. It might just not show.

From: [identity profile] sparklebutch.livejournal.com
Yes (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/30/97888121_ebc69ff2f7.jpg). It's the guy (http://www.leepowers.co.uk/mighty_boosh/the_mighty_boosh.5.jpg) from the show (http://www.uwm.edu/~mcengel/uploaded_images/boosh_large-774177.jpg).

Your Vinces may vary.

Looks as if variation is a theme.

Of the show, or Vince's wardrobe?

Presumably both.

Cat said you might like this. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QlPMef1xKyI) For the budgies. Also she said I might as well give you the ice princess (http://youtube.com/watch?v=eZVzp43peYU).

These are obviously the live show ones, not the telly ones.

Now I'm hearing the song "St. Brendan's Fair Isle."

:)

This post reminds me of the song about the selkie's stepchild.

So what is "St Brendan's Fair Isle"? Ireland or Cape Breton?

Well, you asked.

It's neither, although the version I found does include a cool fiddle. The Bedlam Bards [http://www.bedlambards.com/] are a Texas-based RenFair band with an extensive repertoire of wonderful things. "Furious Fancies" is their more traditional album. "On The Drift" has music inspired by Firefly and Serenity. "Take Out The Trash" is an earthier album.

Continuing the theme of music inspired by Firefly, there's the delightful Tom Smith [http://www.tomsmithonline.com/]

"Done The Impossible" is a documentary about Firefly and the fans, with extensive interviews and a fabulous soundtrack [also available as a cd]. [Further details are here: http://www.amazon.com/Done-Impossible-Fans-Firefly-Serenity/dp/B000IJFJDG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1199642992&sr=8-1
In this song, Michelle Dockrey takes the show's theme and expands on it.
