All I Want for Christmas...

"So," asked Gwen, terminally nosy, "if you could have anything you wanted for Christmas, anything at all, what would it be?"

"Sex," said Owen, the one-track mind.

"A faster computer," said Toshiko, whose computer was faster than anything yet invented.

"Peace on Earth," said Ianto, seriously.

Everyone looked at Jack. He considered. "I have everything I need. The perfect coat. My own pterodactyl. Torchwood saving the world. What more could I ask?"

"I didn't ask what you need. What do you want, Jack?"

He smiled, as if at good memories. "The right sort of doctor."

Ianto might dispute it, since he's the one who does most of the feeding and cleanup. But Jack's the one who takes the beast for a nightly flight.

Which is why Jack always seems so heroic, and his humour has tragic underpinnings. He's a survivor but he reminds us that surviving has a high price.
