From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 for Oct. 5: What are your five favorite pets or animals, in any fandom(s)?
  1. Kiki, from the Adventure series by Enid Blyton. I see by looking at wikipedia that Kiki was a cockatoo. I remembered her (him?) as being a parrot.

  2. Proty, from The Legion of Super-Heros. Chameleon Boy's pet.

  3. Dexter the lovebird in Cagebird by Karin Lowachee

  4. Lockheed, the dragon belonging to Kitty Pryde in X-Men comics.

  5. Inevitably, K-9 from Doctor Who, whom I have only seen in "School Reunion" - though he did have a brief and elusive moment in the first of the The Sarah Jane Adventures. I expected K-9 to be embarrassingly appalling. Instead he won my heart.

Kiki was definitely a cockatoo because I desperately wanted one thanks to the adventure stories from Enid Blyton. I used to play the adventure stories with my friends and I was always the kid who owned the cockatoo (his name seems to have escaped me - Jack?)

Yes, it was Jack. Jack was my favourite, too. I thought he was terrific. The first of many heroes named Jack! Obviously it's just my bad memory concluding that Kiki was a parrot. Great bird, though, regardless of species.

K-9 is amusing and sweet.

If you ever come across a t.v. show called K-9 and company, watch it. Its a very old, very cheesy type of sarah jane adventures...only K-9 was the lead. Sweetness abounds.

My fiancee has been whining about wanting a k-9 for ages lol, and got genuninly upset at the end of school reunion when he thought K-9 was deceased. Looked right at me with a wild eyed look and said 'they wouldn't do that, would they?'. He did a boy squee when K-9 came back though. LOL.

I was worried about K-9 in "School Reunion" too, even though I'd never seen him before. And I was delighted when he turned up alive!

I'll watch "K-9 and Company" if I get a chance.

K-9 rocks!!!!

I also adore Begemot (Behemoth in English) in Bulgakov's Master i Margarita. OK, he's really a demon, not a real cat, and he's certainly nobody's pet, but he is the coolest cat in the literary universe! A large, talking black cat, who smokes cigars, wears a hat and raincoat (I see him as a feline Russian-speaking Bogart), and can swing from chandeliers firing a pistol? What's not to love?!!!

If you want a parrot, don't forget Polynesia from Dr. Doolittle.

I have never read Dr. Doolittle so I've no idea about Polynesia. Nice name, though.

Oh indeed. The chandelier-swinging is in a gun-battle with police. He pretends to be hit, staggers around, then takes a swig of paraffin from the primus stove he's been mending, and launches back into the fray. He's equally at home at a Witches' Ball.
