Well, a post-crusader castle in the mid-11th century makes no real sense at all. The problem with "the middle ages" is that it's a catch-all term for a thousand years of ongoing change. Change in every generation. And it was never a monolithic society, however the Church may have wanted it to be so: there were many opinions and lifestyles and types of people and cultures, some lost to history, others famous enough to be taken as the norm.
The more I read about the 12th century, the more it surprises me, and the more it surprises me, the more I love it.
