I went to the doctor today.

What's up? (1) My weight (2) My blood pressure (3) the dosage of pills I need to take.

I need a good weight-loss diet. And hours of yoga per day.

Advice welcome.

Commiserations.
I can't think of any good weight-loss diets. The only time I ever lost a serious amount of weight was due to stress, which in your case would be counter-productive re: the blood-pressure!

The least drastic option I can think of offhand is: drink twice as much water and eat twice as many fruits and vegetables as you are doing now.

This will actually help cut down, fairly painlessly, quite a lot on what else goes in there.

Also, I vow to stop being a bad influence on you. The stuff we eat when we get together isn't making either of us any healthier.

Also also, do you know about [livejournal.com profile] fanaticize? Might be helpful for keeping the workouts on track, and the beginning of the month is a good time to join.

Check out SparkPeople (http://www.sparkpeople.com). My username there is Beth_wilde, and I even run a branch of the NewWho list there. It's a good place for support and inspirational challenges to keep you motivated. I'm down more than 20 pounds since February :)

I could just lean over and tell you this but:
Pashaw! Unless that doctor of yours had fun shoes: I don't trust him.
But every time i loose weight it's because of one thing: I refuse to buy bread and only eat it when i make my own, from scratch. I am a carboholic so bread is my devil; my moist, squishy, yeasty devil.
Abolishing the devil from my home does a few things.
One, i eat less bread since it takes at least two hours to make.
two, I eat more fruits and veggies and drink more water because they're faster than bread.
three, when i want bread i have to knead for what seems like hours to make it: my upper body workout.
four, my bread is healthier than other bread. It also could beat other bread in a race to the moon if other bread weren't such a pansy.
five, i still get to eat pasta and rice!
The best thing though is that for me, one or two little self imposed restrictions (no bread buying at home, no salt eating at home, and no sugar eating at home) means that going out for food is more of a treat. And I love treats.
but that's just my bag of tricks.

I swear by Weight Watchers.

There is no diet that has been proven to help people lose more than 10% of their wt and keep it off for a year- this is from doctors/scientists that have studied the field. If diets were a drug, they couldn't get approved as they're ineffective. The best thing you can do is eat a healthy balanced diet and exercise. Dieting has been detrimental to my health and caused me to gain wt overall. My body views dieting as a famine and when the famine is over it triggers my body to gain wt in case there is another famine. I've lost over 20 lbs in the last year with no dieting. Actually stopped using artificial sweetener and put sugar back in. Who knows what our bodies do.

I don't have dieting tips, because as people have mentioned, diets per se aren't sustainable and may harm you. Add some exercise - lean muscle mass uses more calories to maintain, and burns some to develop. And something as simple as a brisk walk can boost your endorphins and make you feel even better about exercise. Be mindful about what you eat - especially if it's junk, do you *really* want it, or is it habit? If you (as I often do) grab a handful of dry cereal every time you are near the kitchen, it adds up quickly. Stuff like that.

Weight Watchers works. I would also recommend exercise, but I know you walk a lot anyway. It's actually easier if you start out as a couch potato like I did.

Go lower carb and stay that way. Eat protein, fruits and vegetables.

Also, a cool trick for making diet pasta. Instead of real pasta,
use zucchini and slice it with a julienne peeler or a mandolin:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105-1767444-8057228?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=julienne+peeler&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

That way, you get to eat the pasta sauce, which is the delicious thing,
without eating the gluten.

For yoga, take a class. It's easier to maintain excitement when someone
else is there to provide it for you. (I keep telling you this, you keep on
ignoring it. )

Weight Watchers is the best, healthiest, and the results last. As you know, I have not gained any of the weight I lost since I went there.

To keep down expense of joining WW, http://www.thedailyplate.com/ has a great website. You can keep track of all you eat, while getting info on everything, not to mention suggestions, etc.

and don't forget to include carbs - as you have an unusual situation re hunger, you'll need carbs to satisfy or you'll be starving 24/7.

I, also, wgt up, BP up, meds up. (sigh)

When I can discipline myself, I also have found Weight Watchers effective. I know what I have to do - I just don't want to do it.

Above comments seem good and seem to be from people who know your particulars.

Best of luck!

Re advice, I wish I could tell you how to work out every day; I need to do the same, and I don't seem to. Let me know if you find a magic spell to make us both move.

Yes, that's a catch-22, isn't it? Probably not the best way for me to do it.

Yes, that sounds like good advice. I really should drink more water. And I like fruit.

We should promise not to be mutually bad influences. Pho can't be bad, right?

No, I didn't know about [Unknown site tag] - I'll have a look.

So. What healthy thing should we have for supper tomorrow?

Down 20 lbs. since Feb. sounds wonderful. Hearty congratulations!

No. No fun shoes. At least... you know, I was so busy being bummed out by my blood pressure I didn't even look at her shoes. I should have! Oh, well, next time.

I already don't eat bread. Or hardly ever. Except I did have a sandwich for breakfast yesterday. Mostly I try to avoid wheat altogether. It's a difficult thign to avoid.

Rice is good. I eat a lot of rice.

Thing is... I thought I was already eating really well. Following the Canada food guide, not having too much sugar or wheat, lots of vegetables and fruit. And I still gained weight. What's with that?

How much do they cost? I've certainly heard that they're good, but my impression is that they're expensive.

If diets were a drug, they couldn't get approved as they're ineffective.

Hee. And the theories behind them always sound so good.

Problem is, I was already eating a balanced diet, and I walk 45 minutes per day. And I still gained weight. It's frustrating!

So how did you lose 20 lbs? Just not eating too much?

If the pork ribs are already bought we can totally eat them; I assume you weren't planning to deep fry them. But possibly I should NOT make potato salad. Or I shall try the yoghurt-not-mayo trick and we shall see if it is good?

Or I can bring good fruits and/or raw veggies?

If they are not already bought... hmmm. Roasted chicken is, actually, not bad. Pate is not TOO bad. Fish is very good and virtuous. I have salmon burgers.

We don't do too badly at your place overall, except when we bring too many desserts. It's when we pub that we really seem to lead one another astray.

Pho is not too bad, but the deep fried wontons have to go. :( At least, not every time.

Tomorrow is super short notice, now, but after that for sure we will be more mindful, yeah?

I heartily approve of exercise, but I walk so much.... and exercise, like anything else, takes time away from what I want to do. I suppose I can make a point of exercising at lunchtime. I will stop getting lazy on the hot days (which won't come so often now anyway) and taking the bus to work. As long as it isn't too icy, I can walk in any weather.

I really don't eat a lot of junk. I eat better than most people I know. (Or at least, I think I do!) So I'm grumping: "This is so unfair!" But as we all know, no one ever said life was fair.

Yes, if the yogurt-instead-of-mayo trick turns out to taste good, that will be a great discovery. I can bake the pork ribs (that won't be too bad, right?) - and not use the garlic sauce I planned, which is sort of sweet.

Fruits and veggies would be wonderful.

I'm mourning those deep fried wontons already.

Yes, we will be mindful. And share tips as we learn them, okay?
