It probably wouldn't be confusing if you were reading it, rather than listening to it.
It is very complex.
It is not cheery at all. Things just get worse and worse. But in interesting ways. I wouldn't want to stop reading. Even though I didn't like the fourth book much - not nearly as much as the first three. My favourite characters were missing, and the story didn't seem to advance much.
The big problem with the series is that George R.R. Martin is writing it very, very slowly, and the more he writes, the longer it gets, so we begin to fear it will never ever be finished.
