[livejournal.com profile] scarlettgirl had the most wonderful description of Torchwood today.

Crack!fic with a budget, she called it.

So delightfully true.

Crack!fic with a budget and John Barrowman.

I've seen it described as "TV's answer to fanfiction.net". Which, well, ouch, but on the other hand...

It is all of this but you know, I really can't see this as a bad thing.

I think the show needs and deserves better writing - and I'm living in the hope it will get it. I think it needs to upgrade the characters so they don't turn into complete dopes, and focus more on the exquisite Captain Jack, and maybe have a few more stories with real aliens in them. And maybe more sex.

But I'm perfectly happy to have canonical fanfic, especially when it's slashfic!

What a lovely description, and so true.

I agree with you re the need for better writing. It's not that RTD can't write well, but it seems as though he's writing at the last moment and not looking for more ingenious solutions.

And I think he should curb his need for the big blow-off (in circus terms). Sometimes a quieter end-of-season finale might be better. Or at least one where the primary conflict is moral or emotional, not fighting some demon.

Simplifying too much? Sometimes... I find the contrast between the (to my taste) best episodes and the worst episodes an amazing contrast. I like it that they have variations in tone and style, and can't expect all of it to be to my taste. And each series has its own flavour too.

Or at least one where the primary conflict is moral or emotional, not fighting some demon.

Though in general I love RTD's writing and his stories, he loves the goofy monsters much more than I do. I could do without the Lazarus creature or the Empress of Racnoss - and would prefer to do so. I'd have been happier to have the Master as the villain and do without the Toclafane. But he didn't ask me, did he? And I am not an eight year old boy, and never was. While RTD was and possibly, in part, always will be.

Hee! And thank you. Although I have to admit that I'm not the originator of that particular pithy phrase. I'm fairly certain that honor goes to [livejournal.com profile] chase820. Regardless, best description EVER!
