Disappearance

"Jack's nowhere," said Owen, annoyed. "Nowhere on earth. He's gone."

"Alien abduction?" speculated Gwen.

"He went in a hurry," said Tosh, "but voluntarily."

"Maybe he stepped through the Rift."

Toshiko remembered a dance hall in 1941, a man in uniform, a dance, a kiss, and the haunted look in Jack's eyes when they had to leave. He called it duty, but that was before Owen shot him; before they betrayed him; before he died for them.

"Maybe he found somewhere he'd rather be."

Sixty-seven years ago. The Ritz. Dancing in his lover's arms.

Maybe. Tosh hoped it might be so.
