fajrdrako: ([Torchwood] - Jack)
[personal profile] fajrdrako

At lunchtime I was reading a novel called Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong, and was amused to see that two of the characters introduced before page 30 are named Jack and Owen. The guy named Jack is dangerous, interesting, and mysterious; and 'Jack' is not his real name.

Am I just obsessed, or is the universe cheerfully playing up to my obsessions?

Is it a new book?

I find some of my favourite authors dropping references into character names quite often. I figure we're all watching much the same set of shows.

Yes, it's a new book. It was given to me by a friend who got it at the Canadian Book Expo just held in Toronto. Copyright date 2006 - but I hadn't heard of it before. It isn't about witches or werewolves this time, it's about a female Canadian assassin. Cool.

Yes, we could well be watching the same (good) television. Which is an idea I quite like.

I'd say the former ... but refuse to rule out the latter possibility.

I'd still like to come to a Doctor Who party sometime at your place!

It would be fun if there were other familiar names as I read on. As it is, it adds a sort of interesting dimension to have this dark-and-interesting guy named Jack lurking around the story.

I'm always happy to hold Doctor Who parties - it's a matter of finding a time that works for us both. Not so easy!

If so, please tell it to play up to mine sometime!

I find the idea of female Canadian assassins faintly disturbing.
I think Conrad does, too…

Only "faintly"? I find the notion quite chilling!

Oh, don't worry, I don't murder people, not even for pay. I'm one of those yoga-pacifist types.
